You guys did such a good job on my last question regarding Foxbody steering wheels, I'm going to try a second one.

I'm wanting to get input or info on the various “halo headrests” that are out there. Please include pics if you can because apparently there are many variations. I like the larger halos that have the netting. But are these available with the center flat post to fit 88GT high back seats? Or at all? And what's the difference between these and the ones LMR sells? I've seen the large ones but they've all been covered in leather so I don't actually know what's under there. And how the netting attaches.

Another one.....if I happen to have some Recaros or Corbeau seats, do these have the round double posts or the flat bar like OEM? And if they don't have the flat bar, how have people made them fit seats exactly like mine?

I'm just trying to get a list of what's out there and what fits which seats.

Thanks
Wayne

1983-1986 Mustangs had the halo headrests with the large flat center bar. 1983 was the only year they were netted, and then 84-86 were open. Other cars had them as well. I think my halos came from a Ford escort.

Recaro headrests are 2-post headrests and not compatible. Folks have made it work with some welding. The link above seems to be a recaro style headrests welded to a flat bar to work in a Fox seat.

Looks like there are 2 kinds to me then. You have the fat ones with the smaller opening that came on mustangs and you have the larger flatter style that has a much bigger opening. The pic below (MerchantSVT's car) are the ones that would interest me. Ive seen them like this on Recaro seats but also on the Corbeau seats.

Here are some Corbeau GTS 2 seats with halos added. (atl_mustangs car)

The red ones look kinda half way between. They certainly don't look like the small opening ones. Anyway, I'm just trying to plan for the future.

Oh, I did find these pics as well. These are for sale as "Recaro halos." I snagged the pics so I could have a visual of the mounting mechanism. These would be pretty easy to convert to the flat bar.

Typically the headrests is restricted to the specific brand seat. I haven't seen any interchangeability. The post width and diameter is what matters. Recaro has a few different widths. I think 11" 7" and 9".

I've seen folks modify the head rests. That bottom style recaro doesn't look like original configuration.

Here are my Recaro headrests. One has the bar removed so you can imagine how it routes inside the headrests

Oh, wow. That's some good info Mike. Thanks. I do know that covering them with the same leather as the seats would look the best to me.

Resurrecting my old seat thread for another question.
I've recently been given rear seats like these in the pic, the steering wheel, and the halo headrests. This is my favorite factory interior. Picture is an 85GT on BAT. My 88GT seats look the same as these as far as high back sport seats. Of course TMI doesn't list their covers for the pictured seats available for an 88GT because of the different headrests. My question is why wouldn't the front seat upholstery be the same? Or is it? Appreciate the help.

I can't tell ya how many interior images and threads I've been through over the years. Generally, they end up talking about TMI, and others...

I'm pretty much to the point that when I'm ready to pull the trigger, I'm going to an upholstery shop and getting what I want.

I have the Canyon Red interior. There are no commercially available matches [on this planet] that I'm aware of so.... I'll take it somewhere and get it done in one shot. It will all match at the very least.

Nothing at all to do with your Halos though... I'm with ya on the netted ones. Whatever it takes to make it work to get what you want.

Well thanks for the reply. My current question though is are the 85-86 GT sport seats the same as the 88GT sport seats. They look the same to me. I know the headrests are different but like i said, i have some halos. Wanting to make my 88GT seats look like the pic.

They are the same.

84-89 sport seats are the same except:

  • 87-89 seats have power lumbar
  • headrests (which can be swapped around)
  • Material

I have that exact same interior in my ‘86 GT, with no rips or tears. Has anyone found a dye to restore the color on these seats?
