I just finished a cam swap (comp cams xe270hr) & new HB and need clarification on setting initial timing. The car is running with a Hypertech chip (cause it came w/it) and I set base timing w/spout out to about 12*, which is way down from the 18* or so it was at originally. Anyhow, it idles great & really runs well, but pings a bit under hard accel. So I'll back it down to 10* and see, but before I mess with it too much, should I remove the chip before setting base timing?

Thanks,
Jay

Hello Jay

That is a question than can be tough to give an accurate answer

You really don't know where the dizzy was when the chip was burned

If it was at 10 ... then every additional degree you add in with the dizzy
will be a global adder to whatever the Pro Tuner did to the spark tables.

Well ... now that I looked at what I just typed

It works the same no matter where the dizzy was when the chip was
burned

Never the less ... you get the idea ... I hope
I'm trying to get across

Now ... If it pings with the dizzy at 12

Then you basically got two choices

1 Back down on the spark
2 Up the octane count

Well ... I guess you could do both

I mean ... Maybe he had the tune set to be aggressive
and
He was running good gas to obtain the most spark possible

I'll confess to using that method

Thanks Grady,

You forgot one more option....only drive in cooler, less humid weather. 56* this morning and it ran like a champ! In fact I added a bit of timing cause it was feeling kinda sluggish at 12*. I'll see how it does throughout the day with the warming temps. The tank has 89 octane in it, so once I burn through that I'll step up to 93.

Guess it's gonna be a crap shoot as long as I have that chip in and am having to adjust timing w/the dizzy. Hopefully not for too much longer as I plan on stepping up to a tweecer. I just wanted to get it running decent, get on a dyno and get a good baseline for future comparisons.

I know what you mean Jay

If you decide to go with the Tweecer and the self tune thing
which btw
I highly reccommend cause it has worked out pretty good for me

I'd skip the dyno ... for a while :Word:

I'd get familiar with tuning your Stang in Closed AND Open Loop

You then use the street to get to like 97 or 98% on a perfect tune

That way ... when you go to the dyno ............

All you gotta do is + or - a little spark or fuel to make maximum power

Skipping the dyno is probably good advice, but the wait is killing me! Although it would put me closer to having the $$$ for the Tweecer & wideband. You've definitely given me something to think about. Thanks again for the help & direction,
Jay
