Follow me here ...

Cars that came stock from the factory - lets say they are set up the same

for the sake of this discussion - all three are 1970 fastbacks

same engine / tranny / rear gear set up

One has a Shaker Hood

One has the MACH 1 style hood

One has the closed (no scoop) hood

Is the shaker the strongest option ?

Since my main concern is between a MACH 1 kinda hood and a Shaker -

Anyone know of dyno results that show two cars that are basically the same, but one have a MACH 1 style hood and the other a Shaker ?

Well, just thinking about your question.. the difference would theoretically be a ram-air effect on the shaker set-up? If indeed there was a difference, it wouldn't show up on a chassis dyno, since the car is not moving.

The shaker since it is theoritically bringing in cooler air from outside the engine bay there will be more O2 for combustion since it is a denser charge.

Most of the time the Mach 1 scoop wasn't open. At least I think so. The shaker scoop was fully functioning.

You can cut the hood open and make the Mach 1 scoop functional, but then the weather can get in. The shaker has a flap that opens and closes. So it could keep the rain and stuff out if needed.

Not sure if this helps.

There's probably not 10 hp difference between the two. And the difference if any would only be at high speeds.

In the last issue of...i think car craft or hot rod....they show different intake/hood setups and how much hp you get from each.

one thing you can do if you decide to cut the hole under the mach scoop, is to to drill about 4 holes in the bottom of the factory air cleaner base and use a hipo 289 air cleaner lid, like the 69-70 shelby's used, this is the exact same air cleaner assembly used on them but with a different hood. the 69-70 shelby's did not have a flap either, at least that i am aware of, hence the drain holes in the base of the air cleaner. i am useing what i have just described to you, eventually with the correct style air cleaner to hood seal. good luck

My father did some cypherin and fiiggerin many years back. And his outcome was that other than getting fresh air to the motor, the ram/shaker hood does nothing to actually "force feed" the motor. I dont remember the speed, but it was pretty fast that you got a ram effect. Basically by the time you get going fast enough for it to help the aerodynamics are more important.

At any rate, scoops and shakers are dang cool ideas.

With the shaker too, it has an opening inside the engine bay as well doesn't it?

Yea, they still had the "snorkel" sticking off to one side of the cleaner like the others,

Ahh right, so they had a vacuum-controlled flap? That makes it seem reasonable then.
