shocks and rear end removal help

whats up! so im finaly going to atempt the rear swap on to my 91 notch and im having problems trying to remove the shocks, it wont budge it moves but the nut wont, hope you understand what im saying anyways im doing this alone and dont know what im doing as far as drum and ebrake removal goes, also i have one jack someone said id need 2 and another person to help. so can you tell me the easy way to do this, i wanna get it done and drive my car its been way to long. thank you in advance.

Put the car on jack stands and let the rear hang. jack the rear up with a floor jack.. Your gonna have to use air on the top shock bolt or let the rear hang and do it. You may also need to use torches to loosen the rear control arm bolts depending on where you live.

you need some type of impact gun to remove the bolts on the shocks!it could be air or electric.unless u r getting new shocks than cut the bolts with a saw or something.you should have the car on stands with a jack under the pumpkin.i did a swap by myself its not that hard just take ur time.i had a hard time removing the ebrake cables too so i just removed the brake assembly with the cables on them cause i was doing a 5lug swap and the axles had to change anyway and plus my old brakes were in better shape than the brakes on the rear i was swaping! good luck and be safe.

why are you taking the top shock bolt out just for a rear end swap??? all you need to do is remove the bottom nut and bolt.

Dude I just finished a marathon swap of my rear end putting in Moser 33 spline axles, spool, c-clip eliminators, strange 10 way shocks, coil overs etc, steeda adjustable arms, moroso drag shocks, and weight jacker control arms! You can easily do it yourself just make sure the car is well supported with proper jackstands, you have ample room to work and have a good jack. Also some concrete or wood blocks will aid in the removal and installation.

Spray a large amount of penetrating fluid on the bolts and let it soak. Work the bolts with a breaker bar back and forth and before trying to lossen them, turn them to tighten them first. This will break losse any corrosion. If you go hog wild on old bolts you stand a good chance of snapping the heads off even on grade 10 bolts. Ask me how I know. Do you have an impact gun? if not a johnson / breaker bar and socket on one side and a wrench on the other.

E-brake cables are easy, you just have to bend the clips in on the cable at the brake assembly and push it through the backing plate once you get the drums and shoes off. If you have never done brakes before take a picture of it before you take it apart.

What are you swapping in?

im doing a 4cyle to v8 swap. its been hot this summer but im tired of it sittin so im just gona suck it up and swap the rear, im taking the 8.8 out of my 89 gt vert donnor and swapping it over to my 91 notch, its my first swap and the first time ive ever attempted somthing big like this. i got new shocks to put on, how do i get the shocks off? i tried to loosen them but the wont budge and it spins in place, the struts were a bitch to remove is it gona a big pain lol. thanks

There should be a place on the shock where you can vice grip it to keep it from spinning. I use a gear wrench then grab it at the top with some vice grips. The top of the shock usually is flat so I grip it there.

i didnt pay much attention to it but i thinks i know what you are talking about its on the top of the shock rite

yeah you have to remove teh plastic interior caps to access the nuts on top of the shock

ok will do. well tomarrow im going to start on removeing the 8.8 then ill pull the 7.5 the following day then ill install the 8.8 by thursday im going to tack my time since i dont know what im doing lol wish me luck

so i went out this after noon to flip the donor car around for the rear end swap and noticed i had a rad leek on my notch, it was coming from the drain plug on the rad and i went to get a replacment and the whole piece just poped off so the rad is no good, plus i put my finger inside it and it was cacked with what felt to be like clay and the hoses were also like this even the ones at the fire wall, well they were the worse, now im tapd out as far as funds go and i put the 4 cyl rad on, it was a new aluminum one the the po had installed, i put as a temp just so i could move the car wen the swap was done till i had funds, but now i need hoses. my ? what would be a good way to flush the whole system out, and get rid of this clay type crap thats there, also does anyone got a parts car with a working rad and maby the hoses as well lol pm me if so id like to buy them. sorry for crappy typing.

I just did the 8.8 swap into my 4cyl. a few weeks ago. The top of the shock stud should have flat sides..an open end wrench will work to hold it then you use another ratchet wrench or open end wrench on the nut.....You can usually get the smaller top wrench to wedge against the fender while you crank on the nut.......Takes a little while but worked for me.

Yes a good air ratchet wrench will work too....but you have to have a good one......

ok so after doing a search i guess i can use the 4cyl rad since the 4cyle was ac equiped from the factory and its post to the same as the 5.0 they look the same and are the same thickness so ima run with it till it crapes out on me lol. now again whats the best to flush the gunk out my coolent system also what should i do for the rad flush the 4cyl had a blown head gasket with that rad and i wanna clean it out before running it i know this off my orignal post but the help would be greatly appreciated thanks again for reading my rants and putting up with crappy typing lol.
