Should I Cam My 2001 Mustang Gt?

I have a 2001 GT with around 142,000 miles on it, I have done many other performance upgrades and chose to put off "Camming" the engine due to cost and what I have heard it can do to the cars street drivability, but am now at a point where I dont have tons of options left for upgrading the performance except for supercharging it (which Id prefer not to do to an engine I will probably replace once this one goes).

So my Question is, should I look at Upgrading my Camshafts on the old girl? What are the major drawbacks and would getting a more mild upgrade help offset these drawbacks?

Other than cost, i dont see any reason not to cam it. Check out modularheadshop. I got mine degreed and the install wasnt bad at all. It may be a little intimidating at first but read read read and read some more. If you plan on having a shop do it, it isnt worth the coin. Gained horsepower per dollar spent doesnt add up.

Why not supercharge it? As long as the motor has been maintained well, you shouldnt run in to any issues. That is by far the most bang for your buck.

I got stage 1 blower cams, if i could do it over i would have bought stage 2 blower cams and retarded the cams 2 degrees (if i had any ptv issues).

Major drawback to milder cams is that the idle wont chop or if it does, it wont chop much. I guess that music is based on personal preference tho. For me, the harder the lope, the cooler it sounds.

Also remember, when you cam swap, it shifts the power curve. The nastier the cams, the less bottom end and the more top end. It also increases the rpm you make the most power. If you get too crazy, you will have to swap your valve springs, otherwise youll get valve float.

I like Comp Cams. For a stock bottom end engine with stock heads and stock springs, I wouldn't go more than a stage 1 cam. The main problem with a stage 2 would be PTV clearance issues and valve float.

Thank you for the helpful info! the reason im leaning away from supercharging is because this engine has about 145,000 miles on her and some day I would like to put 5.0 engine in there, just seems like a waste of the money to put an expensive piece of hardware on an engine that is already been weathered! although you could follow the same logic with camming it too I suppose.
either way I would love to cam it myself, im no mechanic by any means but I would certainly love the experience and the saved money depending on how in depth and extensive the work is the cam the engine!

a cam isn't going to make much of any difference at least not enough to make you happy

if its still got stock heads on it toss on a set of trickflow 44s or similar

Mild cam on my old 96 made me happy...the Comp 278's on my car now made me real happy.
