Small block between big block V8

One guy at other forums and he want to know about engine size.....302, 351 W and C, 400 and 460.

He said:

I know there was a small block 400 cause I needed a new tranny for my 460 and was told by the tranny shops I called that the 400 big block uses the same tranny as the 460, but the 400 small block uses a different one. I may be wrong about there being a 351 Big Block, but there is definitely a 400 small block. And since the 400W is the small and the 400C is the big, then I would only assume that the 351C is a big block. I doubt I'm wrong but admit I could be... I will do some research.


Well I thought 302 and 351W and 351C is small block? 400 and 460 is big block?? Can you explain more about size???

Let me know as soon as possbile and I will let this guy about this....

302 is small block, 351w and c are small blocks, 351c has big block heads (didnt work out too well ive heard) if youre right then 400 could be either as well, ive never even heard of a 400 block, but i dunno THAT much. 460 is def. big block.

then youve got all your bored out and stroked out motors, 306 (bored 302) 331stroker 347stroker on and on and on.......

That's all Chevy stuff.

Ford has several series of engines, there is no big block or small block although the winsor series has been dubbed Small Block Ford because the 302W and 351W take many of the same parts.

Winsor Series: 260-351W, any number with the W at the end signifies Winsor.
Cleavland: 351C and, I think is the only cleavand Engine. They are considered big blocks.
Modified: Some type of cluster****, don't know much about it but I've heard they work best as a boat anchor. Most known for the 351M, and 400M. I belive they are "modified" cleavland blocks, don't know.
FE - 390, 429, 460, I think the old 352 and a few other oddballs.

There are some other Ford series's of engines, I don't know everything.

OK...302w and 351w are small blocks with inline valve heads, Boss 302 and 351c are small blocks with canted valve large port heads, 351m/400 engines are smog motors from the mid 1970's based on the 351c with taller deck heights.(I consider them small or med blocks and they look like a 351c) FE series engines are big blocks(330 truck engine,352,360,390,406,410 Lincoln engine,427,428's) 385 series engines are big blocks! (370 truck, 429,460) hope this helps.

351C is actually a mid block engine but is most commonly refered to as a small block. The factor that determines big/small block is the deck height and varies from mfr. to mfr.

Relating to the original post, the 351/400M engines do have the same bellhousing/engine mount patterns as the 385 series.
