Smog (Air) Pump Question

Hey,

Go figure, my smog pump kicks the bed right as I'm driving back from getting an oil change - guy quotes me at a ridiculous price so I think I'm just going to buy the part and new belt and since they're not open til Tues. - just bring it in and save some cash - The only two pumps I can find are a "Cardone" remanufactured one from Advance and a Motorcraft one (CX-1399) for about 280 - the Cardone is like 112 - any suggestions/ and or does it matter which one I pick up? Thanks guys.

Dude check out Ebay you can get them cheap as hell I'd given you mine if I would have known about it a couple days ago I just threw mine in the scrap pile the other day.

Short belt eh? Hmm....explain. (rookie I am, oh yes oh yes)

***** the mechanic, I ordered the pump and belt from Advance - they can do the labor. I'm not picking them up til tomorrow morning so if anyone else has any suggestions, please elaborate - holla. Thanks.

Yeah, some guys on here just slap a shorter belt on there in a different routing sequenceand remove the pump for HP gains and weight loss. It's not really needed unless you have emissions testing. (for obvious visuals) I think it's a 89.5" belt... but I'm sure someone will come along and confirm that. I've yet to do this to my car.... but it's soon to come.

well, you have 2 options here.....you can either pay for shipping and i'll send you my smog pump, or you can pick up an asp smog pump idler pulley for about $40. the idler retains the stock belt config and gets rid of the pump completely. if you dont have cats, the idler is the way to go since the smog pump serves absolutely no purpose other than pumping air into the cats to extend their life.

here is the idler.....

I'm doing the delete kit for mine and i can tell you that with underdrives the 89.5 isnt the right belt! As for getting a catted pipe i've heard that they are only good for a coupe year's then the cat's go to ****! Even the bassani's do, i heard this from a very well stang machanic! peace

89.5 is not right? what is then?

i have the bbk underdrive pullies, and 89.5 is the closest one i can find that fits. the next one down (88.7) is a little too short. 89.0 would be perfect (i think), but i don't think they make them that length.

i would think the cats would be find if they got enough air. it is the lack of air from the smog pump that kills them.
