Think my smog pump is getting ready to die. Had it replaced 2-3 years ago, but started making noise a month or so ago. This morning, horrible squeal from under the hood when I tried to start it up. Eventually got car to start and made it to work (hope I can get home tonight!). Would like to possibly tackle this myself. Anyone have any experience (preferably directions, pictures) on how difficult it is to do yourself? I'd like to save on the labor costs, but I'm afraid I'll be getting into an all day (or more!) project. Thanks

it is a less than 20 minute process. three bolts if i remember correctly. pull it off, open it up (3 allen bolts) and clean it or replace it. mine needed degreased and a light sandpaper job on the walls of the pump. easy.

oh and the squeal was probably your belt burning up on the locked up smog pump pulley. not cool...

Sounded more like a metal squeal (bearings?), but could very well have been the belt. Restarted car several times after noise stopped ("seized" smog pump broke free??), and restarted it once at work. Just hoping when it fully cools down I'm not going to be stranded this evening. Saw detailed description of s.p. remove/replace but it wasn't for a Fox body (just using a Fox body s.p. on something like a 93-95 Mustang). Was hoping someone had something similar for a 1990. Thanks, though, for the response!

Undo the serpentine belt, unhook the air hose, two bolts, three if you move the bracket over, and watch your toes as it falls out. If the car is not lowered, it can be done in the parking lot. Otherwise, search for short belt to bypass it to get you home. Look under the tech stickies to get you the right length if someone does not just know for you. It was in a recent post too.

I did it before. Was pretty easy to rebuild.

There's a bearing inside that fails. I don't have the part number handy (it's in my progress thread which is 50+ pages) but I just googled the part number when I disassembled it and it was a $10 bearing.

An hour with a press and i swapped it out. Good as new.

In the meantime, you can short belt to bypass the pump, then remove it to rebuild it (or delete it)

Or you can buy the entire pump for $100 and just swap it out. Really only 3 bolts and it's a pretty straighforward swap. Just unhook one hose with a hose clamp, and 2 bolts and it comes right out (after removing the belt of course)
