Is it possible to pass a sniffer test (GA) without a smog pump on a 91 LX 5.0? I just bought the car and the smog pump is long gone but it has cats, etc. Can it be tuned to run cleaner?
Thanks
Andy

one i would think no smog pump would be hard on those cats......but maybe not.....yeah it could be tuned to pass with out any of that stuff if it's mostly stock. the question is do they have a visual inspection?? thats what gets most people even if the car runs clean....

emissions question

It is mostly stock but I'm new to the car and haven't determined what's different. Does anyone know how to tune it to compensate for the loss of the smog pump? I could put one on if need be I just don't know how hard that would be. We don't have visual inspections in GA.

well if it's running ok you might not need to do much. make sure the timing is set to stock ( 10degrees) sometimes retarding the timing slightly can help ( around 8 degrees), then the basics, oil change plugs cap rotor....air filter...sometimes you have to run them through and see what they do and if they dont pass then your reading will tell you what it is you need to fix.....run the low octane gas too, it burns faster than the high octane...

In GA for older cars, they use the "sniffer" test and for newer cars they use the diagnostic port.

Andy, simply stated it will be hard to 'tune' an EFI car (with out using a handheld, etc) to make up for not having that additional oxygen from the AIR system. Does that mean you wont pass? Who knows. You very well might.

Good luck.
