I noticed no reading on temp guage. Im assuming that the smoke is not engine overheating? Water pump is running. Ill check fluid level now, but filled it up.

I tried to grab a vid of the smoke coming off of the exhaust pipes. Not the best quality.

Checked the coolant level, its to the top. However, there isnt fluid in the heads right? Do I need a special procedure?

Glad you got it running. Seems like every time a motor starts up from getting worked on it smokes. Anything you get on the exhaust will heat up and cook like PB blaster.

Thanks.

Need to check on why no reading on temp guage. Maybe too cold still? lol

I know this sounds silly, but how can I tell "normal smoke" from "you are about to blow up your car smoke"?

Heads have coolant in them. If I remember correctly, coolant circulates through the block front of the block to the back of the block then up through the back of the heads and to the front of the heads and then out the thermostat housing to the radiator then to the radiator and through it and then out of the radiator and into the water pump. Rinse and repeat.

Check the temperature of the upper radiator hose. That will tell you if you should be seeing temperature on the gauge.

Looks like all the smoke is coming off of the header bolts which you most likely soaked in PB Blaster?

Next step is to start buttoning everything up. Also have to replace the PS hose, what an annoyance.

Note: the piston rises to TDC twice, compression stroke and exhaust stroke.
I know, it confuses me too.

Second pass sounded much better as I moved literally a tooth. However, started smoking. Looked to be both sides of exhaust manifold?. Smelled closer to plastic. Could be exhaust? Could be some of the 3 gallons of PB Blaster I used? Ill try to get a better vid.

Second video sounds better once it got pressure to the lifters... PB will burn off, any time exhaust gets crap on it it will smoke even just crap from your hands.. Let it idle and build some heat and get to temp, make sure the t stat is opening. if you have a spill proof funnel kit it's a good to bump it now while the front end is up. That said all ways keep an extinguisher handy working in a garage though, not fun if something does light up.... Now put a timing light on it and set it, no guessing stuff. That will be $185 HR diagnostics lol, labor rates a bitch in nj

The FOR SURE way is to watch the intake valve cycle ( yes the valve cover has to be off ) on #1, then rotate the line up to the pointer.... I like to set mine at 10 degrees advanced then set the distributor .........

Is there a possibility you can swap the fitting from the old PS pump to the new one so the existing hose can be used?
I always set my distributor in @ 0* them advance the timing as needed.

Replaced PS Hi line. Knock on wood, no leaks.

Ran to temp, seemed OK.

Need to complete fan wiring. Did someone recommend a place for the probe?

Good write up here on the fittings and hoses.

https://www.corral.net/threads/power-steering-woes-and-tech-information-come-inside.434586/

The fittings can be interchanged on the pumps and from what I have read in the past they are also what determines the output pressure. If you have an 89 and down pump and use the 90 and up hose it will leak. If you have a 90 and up pump and use the 89 and down hose it will leak.

Rerouted the vacuum hoses. That front one for the master EGR ‘red’ line still looks ugly (pic).

Need to cable clamp fan wiring. Wire up fan temp probe and all done.

One last though is the top mount of the PS radiator loop. I forgot to do the top bolt, lol. Is annoying to get to especially without AC radiator.

Gonna have to adjust the temp, way hot. Cockpit guage went to 3/4's, radiator and upper hose too hot to touch.

Maybe thermostat went. I put the old one back in, should be fine but ya never know.
