Well, its finally time that I've hidden away enough money from the wife to buy the supercharger that I've always wanted. But now I'm overloaded with so many different options that I'm not sure what to go with. Paxton?Powerdyn?Vortec?Procharger?...oh my!! I never knew there was such a selection!! And every kit comes with something different! PLEASE HELP!
1. My budget is $1500-$2500....I little more if I really need it.

2. Ive been told that some of my current mods are included in some kits, so can I buy one minus what I don't need?

3. This isn't a race car. Something between a daily driver and a weekend car I guess.

4. Im dynd at about 265rwhp right now. Where can I honestly be looking at for new hp #'s with no more then 10 pounds boost?

5.With my current mods what are some things that I will need that don't come in some of these kits?

I've seen people chew on others for writing questions in here before and don''t want to become one of those. If you wanna help....help. If you don't, just laugh at me because Im a newbie and walk on. Any advice would be great. Thanks

Looking at your mods I'd say to ditch the under drive pullies and install a Vortec. 10 lbs might be a bit much for the FMS block. I'd plan on running 8 for starters and getting a set of 42 lb. fuel injectors and a custom tune. If everything looks good, it won't cost you too much to install a smaller blower pulley (more boost) and get it retuned.

If it were my car and I had ~2500 to spend on the blower alone, Id would go Vortech S-trim. But youll need bigger injectors and a maf calibrated for them. The best buy is prolly the 90mm Lightning kit with the 42's from here

http://www.buyfordracing.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=532

But then youll need to get it professionaly tuned, which can run several hundred more, so now you are into the ~3300 range.

When I do mine, Im going Powerdyne because I am poor and their kits are ~1000 less to begin with and I dont really care about dyno numbers or et's, just want a solid running street car. Good luck with it and let us know what you go with.

I forgot to update my mods.....Im running 24lb fuel injectors right now. Are these going to be big enough? And if so, up to how much HP or Boost? Also, I do plan on swapin the underdrive pully's back to stock. Ive heard thats a "NO NO" with a supercharger. Is that becuase it gives up boost?
Is my fuel pump going to be ok too?

If you read this months issue of MM&FF if you read the cover article titled "supercharger slugfest" they compare the KB and the ProCharger systems (by no means am i suggesting just choosing out of these two). LIke Daggar said, if you want something between daily driver and weekend car, 8Lbs should give you what you want, and be safe for your engine/combo.

The 24s are not going to cut it without an FMU. An FMU is not going to cut it without a proper tune. A proper tune to me, seems kind of a silly thing to do with injectors that are really too small to do the job.

A custom tune can cost as much as $600 for the chip and the tune. It just makes more sense to spend another $150-$200 on a set of 42 lb injectors to let that new chip and the computer do it's job.

As for your fuel pump...

Nope, it's not large enough. Vortech is pretty good about providing and in-line pump in the kits that require it. Not my personal preference for the ideal solution, but it does seem to work well so long as you use all the components in their kits for boost levels it was intended for.

Translation: Don't stray from the path. Follow Vortech's instructions. If you plan to do something different, then inform Vortech of your plans when you order so that you get the right stuff and instructions.

An finally... my Rant on under drive pulleys:

My view on this issue is not a popular one around here because so many have gone out and spent hard earned money on under drive pulleys but here it goes.

Next time you're at the dyno, take the serpentine belt off of your car for one pull. Your HP numbers will differ roughly 15 - 18 HP by having removed the parasitic losses from the crank. Now... toss in that your under-drives are a 20% rotational reduction. That's a whopping 3 HP you got there from those pulleys. Ooops... forgot that alternator is not charging correctly... slap on an alternator overdrive pulley... Ah.... now we're much closer to 2 HP. Sure hope we don't have cooling problems. Wait... what did we pay for these pulleys again?

If you've got a nice set of aluminum pulleys that make your engine look pretty... then I'd consider that money well spent. If you're a race car driver where every ounce of HP and TQ count... maybe you can justify that... For a street vehicle in order to make more power... spent your money elsewhere. You get more gain just by switching oils.

If you run the 90mm MAF and 42lb. injector set that was posted you will be more than fine with the 190 pump. Especially if your regulator has a 1:1 boost ref. in it. most of the new one do. The 190 pump and the 42lb injectors will be safe till about 400 rwhp. That is the same set up I use and my tuner said that the injectors still have a ton of room left on their duty cycles because of the fuel pressure increase from the reg. Where I live the are 5 different tuners within 1 hours drive they all use SCT to tune their cutomers cars. Everyone of them hates tuning with FMU's and 1 off the tuners wont tune with an FMU on the car. If you only have about 3000 grand to spend figure on about 600-900 for the new MAF,injectors, and tune. If you can afford it go with the vortech S trim or SQ. It will match up nice with your set up and the charger will have plenty of room to grow.

will that lighting mass air and injectors work with a boost pipe the upr one......also will it plug right into a fox body car without doing anything else....I plan on getting an S-trim with the fmu and stock computer till i get a tune etc...so would these injectors and mass air work on my car?

This is the connector for your current MAF:

This is the connector for the Lightning meter:

Youc an either swap the pigtail on your harness or purchase an adaptor. Swapping the pigtail is the cheapest solution and has less potential to give you problems.

The Lightning mass air meter will NOT function correctly on your car without a custom tune. Neither will 42 lb injectors for that matter.

Connectors above can be found here:

Ok...I think I'm getting somewhere with this. First of all I havn't heard anyone say anything about the low end kits like a NOVI-1000, Vortech A-trim or the powerdyne(these all seem to be in the $1600-$1800 range) Are these kits just not going to make me happy or whats the case?
Here's some of the notes I've been taking...tell me if Im trackin or totaly lost..
1. My #24 lb injectors need to be upgraded.

2. My fuel pump is just big enough, should work but good to go bigger.

3. Im going to spend about $500 bucks on a tune no matter what( is there anyway around this? )Once I install the system its going to need this ASAP.

4. FMU's are a pain in the butt for tunning.

5. Dollar for Dollar....s-trim seems the best and lots of upgrades available if wanted in the future.

6. Once the project is done I'll be lookin at $3000 at a minimum.

Yep... that's about it. You're better off spending the $3k now as opposed to having to replace stuff later.

The tune is probably the MOST important part of this install. Sure... folks have gotten away with eyeballing the tune before but a hell of allot more have ended up spending a rediculous amount of money replacing engine combos that were blown to hell. Take a look at the thread in the TALK section about the KB 5oh for an example and all he did was just add 2-3 lbs of boost on top of what was already there.

Down the road, you can add an intercooler to that kit, crank up the boost and timing, and start making some real power. My take on the S-Trim is that it's durable, relatively easy to install, and versatile giving you room to grow. I also like the ATI kits but that will put you well outside of your already strained budget.

I went with the 90mm MAF and 42lb. injectors even though I only bought the base Powerdyne kit. I know that the only way I will need to replace either is if I exceed 500rwhp. whick is unlikely, and with the SCT chip all I pay for is dyno time when it comes time for a retune. I have 1 friend who bought a wideband 02 from innovate and an adjustable FMU with 36lb inj. and a BTM. He tun ed the car really well on his own but it took him a long time to dial it in, and the money he spent on all the extra parts would have more than payed for a tune on the dyno.
