ok, I can see the point about admitting anything. You're 95% in the right. I'll amend my advice and recommend that you tell the guy to go hang. I think next time if you're not 100% sure what parts are in the car, just say "I don't know" or "both rear wheels spin at once - not sure what's in there." or "Previous owner said it had xx, never checked."
So, yeah, the guy is trying to get a new rear housing on you, and there is no WAY he couldn't tell it had a spool to begin with. Did he even go around a corner? I've never driven a spool, but from everything I read, it's impossible not to tell when you go around a corner . . .
