speaker installation

I have done the install, but it does require some cutting. Your best bet is an air saw. The problem is, the back deck is really flimsy when you start cutting on it. You should have plenty of rear window clearance though. I would recommend getting a set of 5X7 components. They make some pretty nice sets now, and they are a lot easier to install..........

Just get 6.5's. You will find a better speaker (i.e. components). The just build a baffle like I did, its worth it and easier than cutting.

This is what I did for my fronts. He is right. There are a lot more options in the 6.5" size, and round speakers sound much better than off shapes IMO...

What's involved in fitting 6.5s in the front doors? Also putting 6.5s in the back of a vert?

Just getting some masonite and cutting it into a 7"X8" oval shape, then cutting a 6.5" whole in that. Spray it with some paint in case it gets wet while in the door. Mount both the plate and speaker to the door where the factory unit was, then get creative with the tweeter. It sounds a little complex, but it is really easy. Just cut a shape slightly bigger than the speaker that is already in the door. The rest is pretty self happening.........

I used 3/4" MDF for the front and back. I tore the plastic baffles out so it would fit the front. I have to drill out the rivets that held it in. I didn't do anything fancy, just some wood and bolts.

Here are some pics of what I did.

Rear deck baffle. 3/4" MDF bolted up using the stock holes.

Mounted the tweeters in the Mach460 tweeter pods, it sounds great there.

Mounted the tweeter in the rear at an angle. It's all air tight between the trunk and the baffle and it's more than stiff enough, it braces that panel pretty well.

Has a nice clean look

arent our speakers 6x8s anyway?

Yes, but there are not as many clean sounding 6X8(5X7) as compared to the number of great sounding 6.5s IMHO. Over half of the cars I do installs on request a similar setup as Zero Signal. Components are just so much better sounding. Cool thing is, they are finially coming out with 6X8 - 5X7 sizes in components. They are just few and far between......
