Speed Density to Mass Air Flow

What will it take to convert a 5.0L EFI from Speed Density to Mass Air Flow? I have access to a complete system on an '88 Crown Victoria. It's not an HO.

What would have to be changed besides the computer and the air sensor?

By engine is a basically stock 302 with a performer camshaft.
 
Right. And if you take a H.O. Mass-Air sensor and ECU from a mustang and put them on your standard 5.0 without changing to 19# injectors you will have probems. The standard engine has 14# injectors and the HO stuff is calibrated for 19# injectors.
 
So.......

It can be done. I'll need a new computer, a MAF sensor, and 19lb (or 24lb) injectors.

Now, what about the wiring harness?

I've seen references to harness adapters for this conversion that are reasonably priced, but when I go to the websites to check them out they all seem to be several hundred bucks. Am I looking at the wrong sites?
 
71vert-pga. I would get an EEC-IV out of a late-model fox body if doing the SD to MAF swap.

What car is this going into? Depending on what it's going into. You could probably buy a whole new wiring harness for MAF system to fit in your application.
 
Into my '71 covertible

I just purchased an upper and lower intake from an '89 5.0 Mustang on ebay. I think I'm going to just collect parts one or two at a time untill I have everything I need.

Ford Racing has an SD to MAF kit but it's $550.00. I don't want to spend that kind of money right now (or ever if I can avoid it).

I just want that pigtail for the MAF sensor and the plug for the back of the computer. Everything else I can find in the salvage yard.

I was just going to post and tell you about FRPP's Mass Air conversion and warn you that the price is prohibitive. Don't waste time and money on the Crown Vic system. Get all the parts you need off of an actual mass air Mustang and you will probably save money. You can get a Pro-M Bullet mass air meter fro under $200 these days and I would recommend that unit over stock. The entire wiring system out of the salvage yard inlcuding the computer and injectors should be under $500 depending upon where you get them. Mass air cars are hard to find in the salvage yards so you minth have to pay a decent amount and get them from a Mustang specific salvage yard. I can get them from a friend but I'm pretty sure the harnesses and computer will run right around $400. I can ask if you like.
 
I called USA1 in Dallas. He said he had about fifty 5.0 Mustangs. He offered a complete system for $550 but he kept trying to talk me into going with the Speed Density system instead. He kept saying I didn't want MAF. I wound up feeling that I might not get what I ordered so I told no thanks for now.

The manifolds I bought should be here sometime late this week so I'm just going to take it easy for now. Might try my hand at polishing them (maybe). So I'll wait a while on the harness. But tell your friend I will be in the market for a harness and an A9P computer before too long.

I told 65fastback that I would like to help you guys with his AOD conversion when he gets aroud to it, so keep me posted. Thanks.
 
Do not worry about which processor you get. Regardless of what people tell you it does not make a difference except you should use an auto one if you are using an AOD because I think the timing curve is different but I can't quite remember. You do want mass air so don't listen to idiots.

Pretty much considgering everyone used to covet the A9L.....HAHAHAHAHA. I have used all different processors and by the time you build the engine to the point that the limitations in any processor would show you are going to need a tweaker type chip anyway.

We made 429 HP on blown 93 with it's stock procesor. With a custom chip we tuned it with the laptop to make 507 HP. If the vehicle is NA then you are not going to see much difference between processors and if there is it is so small only the anal retentive racer would be able to notice or quantify. We used the stock 93 processor on the 351 when installed and it ran decently but the tweaker allowed us to fine tune it to an 11.4 quarter mile....we are on the way to lower because we broke the Tremec TKO on what would have been an 11.3 pass.
