Speedo adjustment for new gears

Hello,

I had 4.10s put in my 01 V6. I took it to a Ford dealer to get the speedo adjusted and they said they can't do it. Whatever they use doesn't have the range to adjust it as much as it needs.

Can anyone explain what needs to be done exactly? I'll have to find another shop of some kind that can do it or maybe do it myself.

I could use it on three vehicles I have, but $500 is steep considering all I really need is a one time speedo adjustment. That's half the cost of the rear end change.

I'll have to check around at other Ford dealers that are more Ford performance oriented than the one I went to. And maybe check at other performance related auto shops. I may have to buy one, but I'd like not to.

hand held tuner should fix it right up..even tho it might be costly it pays out in the end..i bought mine and im gald i did..lets you do more then you think

Dallas Mustang used to carry a $99 module that would correct the 99-04 speedo for different gears. I don't see it on their website now, however.

I bet the tuner manufacturers paid them to stop making it, since it was costing them money!

Can someone explain this process for me? All I want is the damn speedo to be accurate.

The tuning shop I talked to says I still have to buy a programmer even if they do the speedo adjustment for me. And on top of that, the programmers lock themselves to the car you use it on. So even though I have 3 cars I could use it on, I would only be able to adjust the speedo on my 01 and I'm done. I might as well throw it in the garbage at that point. So it will cost me somewhere in the $300 to $500 range just to have an accurate speedo.

I like the old days of changing the gear in the tranny case and you're done.

I did find these. SpeedCal. They get spliced into the existing wiring that controls what is sent to the speedo. Not sure if I want to cut things up but it's an option.

FWIIW, it is true that the tuner is locked to a single car. Which means that the tune can be modified only on that one car. However, the tuner can still be used to read codes and ODB2 operational data on as many cars as you like. Don't discount just how valuable ODB2 operational data can be.

I hazard to guess how many problems I have solved using my simple Autoxray unit. Just single PID's and no data logging. The SCT unit has data logging and multiple PID monitoring. Features that I would love to have.

So, please send me a PM before tossing into the trash. I can help defray some of the $$.

FWIIW2, the Speedcal does not work with an automatic (you post does not state if your car is manual or automatic).

Thanks. Yes I'm seeing that the SpeedCal wouldn't work in my 01. It has an automatic.

So I guess I buy the programmer or live with the speedo error.

Thanks for all the help here. I do more on older Mustangs before all this computer stuff. Much of this is new and frustrating.

Of course, the ten cent option would be a conversion table typed up and stuck to the dash! A friend of mine did that when he put gears in his 4.6L. It either looks really stupid or lends a race car feel depending on how you look at it.

The only downside is that your odometer will be racking up miles faster than actual.
