i need someone to pick out my parts. im tired of tring to find out whats better, what the power gains should be, etc. so im gonna give you a budget. $1200 for, new cam, set of heads (prolly a gt40 type OR port and polish my 289 heads), and what it needs to rebuild an engine.
have fun!

Umm a rebuild by itself is likely to cost more than $1200. What are your goals for the engine? Why do you want to rebuild it? Is it down on power? Is it burning oil? Are you sure it needs a rebuild?

If you are looking at purchasing a set of complete alum heads, your $1200 is already gone and really not enough if you want roller rockers! There's the gaskets, the bolts, rockers, push rods, match up work (suggested) etc. Then you go with a cam kit, there are a large range of choices here, even on a budget. This being said, this is just parts, not including assembly so unless you can do it yourself, this goes up very quickly. If you don't have the experience to do it yourself, I suggest waiting, saving some more money, and going for a crate motor!

I still say get a set of 3.50 gears with posi and drop in your 8 inch. That will be about 500$ or so. Then get an airgap intake about another 230ish. that leaves 470$ for port and polish work on the heads. My personal opinion is if the parts don't work together there is no since in just buying them to bolt on. A good set of heads isn't going to work well with stock cam and visa versa.

When you say a 6 cyl. stang, are you talking a new 2000-up stang? The new stangs are making HP #'s comparable to the early A-code V8s.

I agree somewhat with steel1212's asessment. Look for the intake on Ebay. What heads do you have? What tranny do you have? Stock converter if auto? Are you getting beat from a roll or at a light? Hopefully, are you on a dragstrip?

Look here for differential

Or here

Or here is Maeracing

Or you could call Currie them and Mae are both in Kentucky.
I looked for an air gap but all they had on ebay where the knock offs...I would stick with edelbrock.

351W heads fit a 289, no? And they had 20 -25 hp. As it turns out, I have a pair off my 69 Mach 1 that I will sell for $150 for the pair plus shipping that are boxed and ready to go. New springs, valves, and a port job would really be cost effective. A big cam and long tubes would also add some power.

The '69 351w heads are great, I've had mine on my race 289 and went 11.0's in a 3000# car. They do have some port work done on them, nothing radical though, I don't think they've ever been flowed.

Your gonna have to send me the money if you want me to spend it.

Heads??

OK so which heads are we speaking???

DO0E?

what??

I have heard from more than one reputable racer that these heads don't help much on a stock or mild engine...

they decrease compression ratio and basically negate any gain you would get off an early 289...

what are the D00E combustion chamber size 64 ccs? All you would have to do is have them milled or get thin head gaskets. But I always go back to my original statement. If all parts don't work together your not going to gain much. I would get the rear gears and intake and then save for a good cam and head combo.

60.4cc I had 12.7:1 TRWs but that's for early 289 heads. We figured it dropped it to 11.5:1 with the Casio. So if your running 10:1, figure about 9:1. But they breath better due to bigger valves and larger ports. I agree if you have a stock engine, you may not gain any performance.

are you going to get a bigger cam and intake to go along with that?

yes a bigger cam if i decide on heads since they need to match. intake would stay the same unless it is highly reccomended.

The performer isn't much better than a stock intake. If you really want the cam and heads to work well together I would suggest a new intake.
