SPOUT removed? Can't find timing mark

BlackVert sent me a nice picture of what the spout is supposed to look like - the problem is that I can't find one on my 94 GT. The engine has been modified to a 347. Went to time the car after replacing hall effect in distributor. Can't find this SPOUT anywhere.

There are lots of wires that seemed to be removed from the vehicle. There is a wire nut down near the TFI where 2 red wires have been cut and twisted together. Is this where the spout was?

Why can't I see timing marks?

Too many freakin electronics in these things !!!!!!

Found the timing mark - looking in the wrong place. Still think the spout is removed (since I can't find it)

Should I still set timing at 10 degrees? Seems to be bouncing around quite a bit. Should I error to 10 plus or 10 minus?

10 plus, You can usually go up to 14*, but I would do 10...then 12...then 14 and back it down if you start getting pinging. the Spout is just a tiny little gray plastic piece that goes into the harness on the passenger side fender...I'm sure the pics you have show that though. If it's not there, see how much they are from ford, or call around some junk yards and see if they have a car you can source one off of, not having that in will drive your computer crazy and your car won't run 100%

I'm sure I can find one in a junkyard.

The more I start thinking about this, I start wondering whether these are removed when running a custom chip.

I know the previous owner installed a Diablosport Predator Chip. Does anyone know if the SPOUTs are removed when a chip like this is installed?

The spout is nothing but a plug that makes it easy to open or close
a connection

I can't say for certain but those wires twisted together might be taking
place of the spout

Twisted together would be the same as spout in place

Un-Twisted would be spout out

Again ... Thats just a guess on my part

I think Mr Grady is correct. Someone lost the SPOUT chip so instead of rigging up a jumper wire or switch, they cut the plug and did a hard connection. The SPOUT wire is actually pink, if that's possibly the color of yours.

If your timing goes about 10-20* retarded once you separate those two wires, you probably found your SPOUT wiring.

Half the Fords out there (from the 80's) use a SPOUT connector like ours. You could splice one in if you like. Just make sure the connection is decent. Voltage in that wire varies with regard to timing.

Agreed. If your timing is bouncing around the spout connection is working somewhere. The timing will not move at all when the spout is out.

Had some time to work on the car today.

I'm confident the wires are for the spout. They are pink. They were cut very short so I spliced in some longer wires and put on a connector at the end to make a "Make Shift Spout" The timing definitely advances when I connect the wires so I assume it works.

I timed to 10 degrees and to 12 degrees but the car isn't running very well. Missing at higher RPM's. Will higher timing help or hurt this problem?

Also, can someone tell me what this sensor is? (hope I got the picture uploaded correctly)

It was just lying in the engine compartment at the end of a wiring harness. Looks like there is a place for it in the intake tube after the MAF. The car ran fine without it before. Should I put it in the intake?

Or sometimes called the IAT (intake air temperature) sensor. The PCM needs the air temp readings, so yes it must be installed.

put it in-line with your air intake, there's usually a spot for it to screw in

And since it's loose (people do that all the time to keep the EEC from pulling timing when the intake air gets hot. There's a reason timing gets pulled though), put a mark on it so you can index it in the inlet. I like to have the element unshrouded by the posts (so the posts are at the top and bottom).

Also, clean the bulb before you install it.

OK - Back in it goes - Thanks.

Just took the car out for another drive. At 15 degrees - its definitely getting some pinging and the missing or backfiring is still there when I get to about 4000 rpm.

Are they different for an MSD dizzy? Was it a bright blue color? Do you recall the name brand on the box?

Hmm.. ok. I just changed mine a couple weeks ago and got it from Advance and I had similar symptoms. I ended up pulling it back out and installing one from Napa. All is good now!
