I have a t-5 swaped into my 289 65 mustang. always had problems with the starter. the original starter i had the nose was not long enough and it would grind off the tip of the starter gear. I found a starter from a 79 mustang(my first stick was from a 79) it always worked, even after i put in the t-5, but the the other day it started screewing up all i get is the worst grinding sound i have ever heard. any way, got a new one. it worked for one day and i started getting the same grinding problem. gears on the flywheel are fine i think it is a 157 tooth fly wheel with 28 ounce balance. the plate between the transmission and the engine is from a 65 and does not really match up to the t-5 bellhousing, but that doesnt seem like it would effect the starter to me

PLEASE HELP
-Noah

Does the car start even with the grinding? If it does start, does the grinding go away or is it continuous?

I had a similar problem, although with a c-4, when I was putting my 289 back together. I had replaced everything but the starter. The car would start, but the starter sounded like it would not disengage from the flywheel and there was constant grinding. I bought a new starter and installed it. It made a different kind of grinding, and the motor wouldn't start. I added a 1 washer shim to the outside bolt and have not had any grinding since.

I just do not understan how it used to start and it wont start now. maybe i should try using some shims, i really hate taking my car to any sort of shop, id rather do the work myself

I swaped in a tremec on my 73 stang and used the same starter as I had on my automatic C4 tranny. I've got a 351w in my car though but the starter was the same back when I had a 302 engine also.

There's something screwed up on the starteror the flywheel. If the block plate was wrong, you wouldn't even be able to bolt the starter up. The only other block plate is a 164 tooth one, it will not fit with a 157 tooth bell. I would go back and re-examine ALL the teeth on the flywheel, there's likely some missing or damaged.

all the teeth on the flyweel seem a little bit worn, but that would not explain why it worked when i got the new starter and then it stoped working. it looks like normal ware to me. the starter actually does turn the engine sometimes when i put it back on but it just sounds horible

Yes you can replace the ring gear, but I don't know if some machine shops now a days still do this. Used to be a common thing, now it's more common just to replace the flywheel. You can buy a new one from Ford Racing thru Summit for $100

Sounds to me like the solenoid isn't engaging the starter gear properly and grinding away the tip of it. Possible? Is there brutal wear on the tip of the starter gear?

You can have the 50 oz/in one rebalanced to 28oz/in if you have a shop nearby that does engine balancing. I did this with the one on my 331 stroker to use the late model Stang pressure plates.
