starting problems

its not a mustang but i thought yall over here could help me out with my truck - its an '85 with a 5.0 efi and i switched in a 5.0 block out of a 92 f150

just got done with an engine swap cause i bent a rod cause i hydrolocked it and went to start it and wel heres a list of problems:

1. it wont start umless you shoot starting fluid in and hold the gas all the way down keepin the butterflies open

2. when starting it starts real rough and i mean REAL rough and you gotta keep gassin it

3. once it gets running it smoothes out real nice and sounds good

4. once you put it in gear, the idle drops way down

5. when its in gear and you press the gas it revs up then kicks into gear - it slips a lot

6. i have almost no brakes, the pedal goes down almost all the way and i only have about 1 inch of usable pedal where they apply

now i had no problems like these before i took the old engine out and im pretty sure i hooked everything up right

im stumped and about to drive this thing off a cliff cause its makin me so mad

hmmm. ok starting fluid helps start the car in lieu of the presence of gas. however, flooring the pedal cuts the injector pulse. kind of a contradiction.

have you pulled codes?

how is your vacuum? does it feel like the brakes themselves are bad or that you have little or no vacuum assist?
I would recommend NOT driving the car in this condition, as the brake system needs to be 100%.

good luck.

It sounds like its getting way too much fuel during cranking,so much that the spark plugs won't ignite the fuel, but once it's running on ether it clears itself out. (runs real rough on start up) Is it pouring black smoke out the tailpipes when it finaly starts? Whats your fuel pressure set at?

I would say the brakes also need to be bled.

sometimes it pours black smoke just 20 mins ago when i started to start it- it looked like i had flame trowers when i dont

i have the exhaust cut off from the cat back and the whole cat caught on fire

i hear d the idle control motor could affect it or the TPS what yall think

i drove through waist high water - when i took the upper intake off after a month of sitting , water still poured right out of it

when i tried to start it, i didnt press the gas to start it and it smelled like raw nasty gas kinda smelled like varnish coming out of the exhaust

the gas is about 2 months old since it last ran cause i did it when hurricane frances came through, but i put stp complete fuel system cleaner in along with the fuel stabilizer yesterday
