starting

I go to start my 66 mustang today and i cranked it over once,and it kept on cranking over even if i pulled the key out. so i had to take the battery cable off. is it my starter selonoid, or anything else? thanks

Yep, I've seen this before and it was a bad solenoid.

yeah i replaced the solenoid today and it still does the same thing. anything else i can do?

Could have a bad ignition switch. Try unplugging the switch and see if the car still cranks when you connect the battery.

i just put a new igition switch in about a month ago. but i called painless performance (becasue thats who i got my full harness from) and they said my ignition switch probably needs adjustment because when i turn the key to the "on" position the car starts cranking. i tried pulling the wires off of the ignition switch after the key is out today and it is still cranking over...so is that my igniton switch needing adjustment? or something else... and how do i adjust my igniton switch if thats the problem

Just thought of something else. Did you by chance cross (switch) the 2 plug-in wires on the front of the starter selonoid? Weird things happen when they are backwards.

nope, all the wires on the starter selonoid are correct

A weak battery will do the same thing, but that doesn't sound like the case with yours. Got to be in the igniton switch or wiring.

I know this is no help!, But I am having a simalar problem!, I just coverted my 88 mustang gt- to a carbed motor, and when i turn the key the solinoid just clicks, I bench tested the starter, and it spun with ease. I replaced the solinoid and still click click, Im not sure what it might be, I tested current too the starter and it was 10.7 when I turn it over, but the starter doesent turn, im running a msd 6l box and a blaster 2 coil, but a friend said I might need a brain box, Im new at carbed cars so any help would be great!!!!!

Check to see if the car tries to crank when the wire on the "S" terminal on the solenoid is disconnected. If so, it is getting voltage somehow.

Here is a simplified diagram from a previous post:

If it gets voltage even when the ign sw is disconnected, then it is somewhere shorted to a ign source wire. This wire also goes through the Neutral safty switch if you have an automatic.

I have not seen an ign. switch that you could "adjust". Mine in my '66 is a one way only. As you know, "on" is not the start position. Plus, the comment on you disconnecting the wires from the switch and it still cranks rules out the switch for the cranking problem. Still a problem as to the "on" vs "start" position. I would disconnent the solenoid as suggested above and check for its function. Once started, does the starter disengage from the flywheel? Could be the starter is hanging up or soenoid not releasing if it is not disengaging. Use the schematics and go thru the entire starting system and check for power at the proper points with the switch in the corrosponding position.

Solenoids aren't always perfect from the box. I had an '86 Mustang convertible, did the same thing, would not stop cranking, so I replaced the solenoid. Went to crank it, worked fine a couple times, then did it again, the replacement solenoid got stuck too. Well, 3rd solenoid, never did it again. Just because a part is new, doesn't mean it perfect.

I disconected the "s" terminal on the solenoid and the car doenst crank over at all..... i tried bypassing the neutral safety switch to see if thats the problem (i just put a new one in) but it still cranks over untill i disconect the battery. and i replaced the solenoid again just to see if the one i got was faulty, and still it just keeps cranking over untill the battery gets disconnected. i really dont know what to check now....i checked all my wires and they all seem to be right

perhaps you incorrectly put the tumblers in onthe ignition switch?

Sounds like you have the wires on the ignition switch crossed somewhere. Like the Start wire in the on position of the ign switch. Or, try yet another starter solenoid. I had a friend that had the same problem, and drove it like that, under his hood and under the dash caught on fire. Melted the dash, headliner, cracked the windshield, and warped the hood. His problem was a bad solenoid. We replaced it, rewired some of the old harness and he was back on the road.
