Hey Everyone.

I know every one of us have heard a million times that the 86 bottom end is useless because of it's flat-top pistons. For some reason though, i found myself wanting to see just how far i could take it.

So now my mods are just about done. My neighbor had a set of E7 heads and i ported them myself and added crane 1.7 roller rockers (off a 93 cobra) sitting on top of that is an explorer intake, a 65mm throttle body and egr spacer, and a 70mm maf. Exhaust comes from bbk shorties into a pypes o/r x into a violator catback. oh and i have 3.73 gears.

I ran the car only once before the mods. I pulled a 14.1 but my 60' was 2.6. I was on tiny kumho all season tires that i got when i bought the car and i could not keep it from spinning.

I have the stock 10 hole rims and i'm gonna pick a set of decent tires to throw on the back in order to test the new mods out. she sure pulls a hell of a lot more on the street now

I believe that twisted wedge heads will clear the '86 pistons... Not completely useless!

Good luck with the build!

A stock '86 bottom end is far from useless. Trick Flow actually recommends flat tops for their combo because of the higher compression. Yes the head choice is limited, but that doesn't make the '86 bottom end useless. And IMO, if you use E7's with 1.7 rockers, it is going to result in bent valves and damaged pistons... if you put this together without checking P to V clearance, I predict very bad things happening. Using E7s with a stock cam and rockers is risky enough... most don't have enough clearance while others have done it and (with the luck of slight differences in the factory machining) get it to barely clear. I personally wouldn't run E7s because if you happen to be one of the few lucky ones who have clearance, it is just too close for comfort for me. Now factor in the 1.7 rockers and your gonna hear a loud BANG when you fire it up for the first time for sure.

I don't think there is anything wrong with that idea. I love stock junk!

Boy, I hope you're not dumb, cuz the stock parts route is what I'm doing! I just couldn't justify a grand for heads that are going to sit in the garage most of the time, when a properly ported set of stockers(mine are Thumpers) and a ported lower intake can make my nearly stock LX rock mid to low 13's- more than enough to defend itself against whatever I might run across going down the street. And mee too with the Flowmasters. Curious, why didn'tya keep the speed density? Cuz mines staying, TMoss said it would be fine.

for me it was also near impossible to justify even 5-800 dollars for heads so i ported mine myself .
mainly i swapped to mass air because the a9l was supposed to be an excellent computer with regards to adaptive fuel strategies. I like it and it seems to run a bit smoother. but other than that, future expandability i guess in case i decide to go nuts eventually.

makes sense- I was just wondering, even given my perameters, when I did my fuel pump, in went a 255, for those same reasons! You never know what else you may do!
