You may have a calculation error. 13 year old V8 mustangs do not get comparable mileage to new 4 cylinder Hondas.
I remember getting 12-14 in the city and around 20 on the highway loafing at 70mph.

I have got up to 30mpg out of a stock 89gt with 2.73 gears. My current 95 cobra got 24mpg on the highway before I figured out I was running a stock gt computer on a cobra with 24lb injectors and the stock maf and that was with 4 people in the car running 80 the whole way. Since then I installed the tweecer and loaded the cobra j4j1 file into the computer and installed 3.73's I will be happy if I can still get 24mpg now.
I get 14-16mpg in town and average about 22mpg on the highway. If I stick close to the speed limit on the Interstates and put it on cruise control, I can get 24mpg. Considering my car is 14 years old, has over 163,000 miles, stock motor, and maintained regularly.......that's not too bad.
I don't drive slow, though that is becoming more of a trend. Seems like when I drive "spririted", some SUV, minivan, and/or a few of them start driving like idiots. The slower I go, the less attention I draw AND people drive less like morons. Too many people who have the "have to be first" mentality. Maybe it's just me coming off of vacation.
My driving style is about fun and enjoying the exhaust note. I don't try to tick people off, but if I'm first in line at a light, many times it becomes a great opportunity to let the exhaust pipes scream a bit.

Hate to burst your bubble but no I do not have a calculation error. That is 29Max 28 average. That was just over 400 miles on one tank, thank you very much. I take pride in keeping my "14" year old V8 running at its ABSOLUTE BEST. That is normal throttle body services, spark plug changes, fuel filters, etc. And my g/f's New honda gets much more than that anyways, we have gotten 43 in hers making the same trip. and city driving we have topped her at 35 best and 25 worst which is funny because I always tell her that her worst is my best, lol.
just put a new distributor, along with new cap and rotor, all autolite plugs, were replaced at the dealer before i bought the car. along with plug wires.
my bad mileage i blame on still running kind of rich, and the fact my car is 15 years old with 205,xxx miles on the stock motor. i cleaned the MAF, and replaced that pcv hose, and its running a little bit better, but not much. i'd say maybe 15-16, at best.
my cats are clogged as hell i'm sure, because i ran rich as hell for over 6 months, and no telling what the original owner did to the car.
when i bought it, the front drain plug was rusted to the pan, like it hadn't ever been broken loose. after about a half hour of driving, my brand new oil will be black as night.
the motor will be overhauled this summer most likely, if i dont end up just taking a loan out for a truck while im fixing this car.
i honestly couldn't tell you what the plugs are gapped at, my dad was a autotech for over 30 years, and he looked at my plugs and he said they were fine.
air conditioning also doesn't work, so i can't say what my gas mileage would be like with that on.

Im not sure what my MPG is right now b/c I dont seem to fill up again until ive made a trip to the track and then my MPG is shot anyway. I dont like fling up before the track b/c I want it almost empty. I'll figure out what its at the next tie I fill up though. I know its not that great.
I know, I hate to be that guy, but it would be unfortunate to have people interested in these cars read this thread and expect an average of 28mpg. The only way I'd believe that is if the poster filled his tank, took a dated picture of the odometer, then on the next fill up took a picture of the gallons on the pump, dash board, and his odometer again, and did the math out. All on his word that he's not fudging anything (which I would believe.)
I apologize, but while I can see mileage getting into the mid 20s (especially with a stock differential ratio) cruising on the highway, an average mileage of 28 would mean that he's getting 30+ MPG on the highway.
Sorry again, but I'd rather be embarassed personally and raise the flag then let what I think of as BS fly.

When I got 30 mpg out of the 89gt it was all interstate on a long trip running 70-75mph. With mixed driving the car got 20-24mpg average. If it was mostly city driven the mileage would fall to around 17mpg.
IIRC the factory window sticker for my current car (95 cobra) shows 17city 25 highway. At the bottom of the sticker on the left hand side it shows where highway mileage from 21-29mpg had been reported. I'll check it again tonight to make sure.
The funny part of the sticker is that it shows a annual average fuel cost of $948 per year!! I don't even want to know how much it costs me now.
BTW black95gts I can completly understand you not believing these very high mpg claims for these old cars but I think it rare to find them getting that kind of gas mileage. It's definately not the norm. The 89gt that I had was also a little bit lighter than the the sn95's which might have helped it out a little.

Lower the speed to 45-50 on a remote highway and the gas mileage is closer to 25-26mpg. Normal driving in town nets me a dismal 16mpg.
I paid $73 on the last fillup for the Jeep for $3.97/gallon. Almost cried!
I rarely have the opportunity, but I wonder if my stang's gas mileage would go up 2-4mpg at lower speeds (45-50) for an extended highway trip. Not a realistic number, but would be interesting for informations sake.
