Stock GT40P Heads and Trickflow Stage II Cam

I odered that stage II TFS cam from summit and I got it like 3 days ago. I was told that you can install it without getting new springs and I like to verify I can without springs before installing. I also have GT40P heads too.

So what i'm asking is, can you install that without springs?

Note: clearance and valve checkng and all that crap is all ready been done and everything clears and far as Ford when I gave them the numbers(I didn't talk to just any butthole, I talked to someone who knew about stangs in my era.)

The stock springs on GT-40P heads are single springs without any damper and are only good for .450" lift. So, if your P heads still have their stock springs, your Stage II Trick Flow Cam will need new springs on those heads.

Piston to valve clearance has NOT been done just because you talked to someone on the FRPP tech line. I have talked to just about everyone at FRPP over the last 7 years for both classic 289 stuff and Fox Body/5.0L stuff.

They have been dead wrong in their advice at least 50% of the time.

I believe the Stage II is somewhere around an X cam right? About 540/560 split duration? And the X is like 542 lift i think....so i know you can run an X with stock heads/pistons/valves with no PTV clearance issues, but i'm not sure on the 560. I'd say you'll be alright as long as you don't have huge valves in the GT40s but it's best to clearance them to be sure.

You could install it without new springs but i wouldn't recommend it.

Sorry not to clear on something. The guy I've talked to said he's thrown large cams on stock heads beforeaveraging .540 on stock heads NOT BEING gt40 or p's.

With stock springs you're looking at valve float in the upper RPMs....so yeah, change the springs.

Springs I shall get then... Which one's should I get because summitracing.com recommened this part number CCA-986-16. Also, to tell the truth, I don't have all the money in the world to pay a shop to machine whatever the heck needs to be done in order to get the springs installed so can someone recommened springs that would work on my setup without having to do all of that?

Machining for a spring swap??? NO NO NO.

No machining needs to be done to swap springs for your heads. In fact, Trick Flow makes a spring kit for all production iron SBF heads, that includes single springs with dampers rated to .542 lift, valve stem seals, retainer, and locks. It's only like 125.00-ish. I believe they are the same springs that come standard on the Twisted Wedge heads.

When I used to run GT-40P heads on my 289, I did that spring swap with the Trick Flow kit and it was easy. Just rent a valve spring compressor from a local parts store if you don't have one, and you're set.

Ok, stage II TFS cam is .542/.563 --- YOU KNOW WHAT, when looking for springs, what do I focus on to get the right springs? Is it the .542 or the / .563...

get the crane spring kit from mustangs unlimited, it is awesome, goes together very nicely, and you can rev the piss out of it!!

if the gross exhaust lift on your cam is over .542, you can rule the Trick Flow springs out. I didn't know it was a split pattern cam.

I'm sure the Crane kit that was suggested will work fine.
