Stock shifter, ok for drag racing?

Quick question here, is the stock shifter ok for drag racing? Can I shift hard? I have a pretty much bone stock 93GT (motor wise). I'm on a budget right now but I will eventually get a new shifter probably a 5.0 pro. Thx for the help

if your gonna race it then definitly upgrade the shifter.i didn't at first and later regretted.

The shifter will work just fine, but you'll lose a lot of time hunting for gears and missing shifts.

I have the Steed Tri Ax and it made a huge difference. Didn't think it really would, but your shifts are alot shorter, making your time quicker.

The stock shifter isn't really that precise and its really long. When i switched, i couldn't believe the difference it made.

It will only make your times faster if the shifts are faster. My friend has some pos Ebay shifter stick on his Factory Hurst in his 2000 Z28, it's so short that it's a nub, it takes way more effort to shift with than something taller.

Stock shifters do suck in these cars though. MGW is supposed to be a bad mofo. Avoid the Hurst Billet Plus, it's a pos, I broke one in half, the UPR is like the Triax but cheaper, I ripped the knob off with all the threads on it.

I belive the most important reason to get a shifter is that if your banging gears hard, the stops on the aftermarket shifter will prevent a bent shift for or damage to the guides.

Get a shifter trust me. You will love it.

If you can't afford a shifter right now, check ebay for a short throw handle. It will bolt onto the stock base and be a lot shorter. I picked one up off ebay for $5 and it was great. It made a huge difference alone.

But eventually i went with a MGW shifter and it was worlds better. I have something like a 3" thrown from 1 to 2

I concur... I can shift my stock shifter just as fast as the Pro 5.0, but without the stops, theres a good chance after a while your going to bend a shift fork!

For a quick fix, remove the rubber dampners in the handle and round off some 9/16" nuts for spacers. Makes a HUGE difference in the shifters 'feel'. If you are really on a budget get the cadmium plated shifter from a turbo coupe or early 5.0 car. They are short throw compared to the later V8 and all 4 pot shifters.

I can shift with the stock shifter pretty stupid fast (mostly powershifting) but I really like the longer throw of it. Makes the car feel like more of a muscle car I guess.. Are there any other aftermarket shifters that are same length as stock?

Cadium plated shifter? It looks the same in a Turbo Coupe but I think it's shorter too. Compared it to the stock shifter in my friend's 93 notch and it seems shorter. I will be selling it when I part the Turbo Coupe out.

Buy a Steeda Tri-ax and put the stock handle on it. Take trhe rubber bushings out for a more solid feel

Thinker - bottom line is you can damage components inside the tranny by shifting really hard with the stock shifter. Only you can decide if you want to take that chance or not. Most folks just like the way aftermarket shifters feel without understanding about reducing the possibility of bent/broken shift forks that can occur from hard shifts with the stock shifter.
