Stud mount valve adjustment help please

Does anyone know anything about valve lash. I've been trying to get my adjustment right and Im having trouble. Just about everything I've read is a little different. Some say to adjust until the pushrod can't be turned and lock. And some say you should add 1/4 to 1/2 turn beyond that. I've tried the zero lash and 1/4 turn but that isn't right either and this is a hot motor. This is starting to drive me nuts. The car has power but there is studder in acceleration and an occasional exhaust backfire. :bang:
