stupid question about emissions

I know this is prolly a dumb question but is it possible to pass emissions without the smog pump? I bought the car with no smog pump at all and a offroad x-pipe i plan on trying to find a stock mid pipe and swap for the test but i dont know if i can get all the smog equipment and im clueless on how to install it. so is it possible

Doubt it. The oxygen the pump puts into the pipes cuts the gasses way down.

most likely you will fail without the pump and cats. if you live in a state that has very very loose laws, you may get by but its near impossible. hooking up the pump and catted mid-pipe is easy but if you dont want to do it, just pay off the shop for an illegal smog

Well I plan on either getting a stock mid pipe off my buddy or just getting a high flow mid pipe with cats, so thats not my problem really. My problem is all the smog equipment. I dont have that much money and im afraid its gonna cost alot of money to get all the smog stuff and then I dont even know if ill be able to install it myself (I'm still a beginner). I also gotta figure out why my reverse lights dont work. it just sucks cause inspection and emissions is coming soon and ive got so much i gotta fix.

Some of the newer cats do not require an air pump, which is why air pumps are not installed on newer vehicles. Maybe someone can post a supplier for these? I am interested in finding some myself.

Even if you can pass the sniffer though, it is still possible too fail the visual, if you don't have the factory equipment.

What state are you in?
What are the emissions standards that you will be held to?

Looks like he's in PA which is trying to pass a law to make aftermarket exhaust illegal. You figure from there what they'll do with his emissions inspection! Oh, boy!

i live in ct which has some strict emission laws i passed the 2 spd test with just a factory cat pipe, iff the converters are decenct and your setup not to wild lower the timing to 6 degress and back the fuel pressure off to like 30 should be fine without the somg pump.

Yeah i'm from PA. Although kinda suprised about the aftermarket exhaust law they wanna try and pass. I've never heard of anyone having trouble about exhaust is Philadelphia area so I dunno that was a shocker to hear. But as far as the smog pump goes if i get eveything put back on will I lose any noticable power? And if i do decide to go with a high catted mid pipe how much sound and power will I lose on that as well.

A good set of cats probably won't produce noticeable power loss. Cat technology has advanced a long ways since our cars came off the production lines.

The air pump will cost some power though, mostly at higher rpm, I would think.

Anyone ever seen a clutched air pump? Something like the A/C clutch.

Worry about passing emissions insp. first. You don't pass, it doesn't matter how much you lose in power, you won't be driving it. Best thing for your pump and related items (except the cats) is to pull stuff off a U-Pull-It junkyard engine. Give you some experiance with not too much cost.

Okay thanks for all the replys. i'll prolly take a look around at some junkyards around me and see if i can get all the smog pump equipment. I'll most likely just get a high flow catted mid pipe and just take the smog stuff off after emission testing. long as its not to hard to do it myself. how hard is it to disconnect and install?

ok, first of all, with good cats, you will pass the sniffer test, as long as your car runs clean and isnt all carboned up inside. If you have a dummy pulley where the pump was they may not notice you are missing the pump or may not care as long as the sniffer numbers are in range.

As for getting the smog equipment, it is not very hard to hook up, but will probably cost you about $300-500 because you will have to goto a dealer for some of the parts no doubt. Also, it will not affect your noticable hp AT ALL. Maybe 1 or 2 hp are shaved off the top end and thats it, the only reason people remove the air pump is to get the extra 10 lbs off the front end.

And for those of you who have an air pump and are running radical motors that are no where near passing inspection, you can put a smaller pulley on your pump for inspection and it will spin way faster so more fresh air is dumped into the H pipe while on the dyno.

As for the new law, it probably wont happen. Its only because of rice anyway.
