stupid tire question

Hey guys I understand the largest tire I can fit on my stock 17" rims are 275's. Is that safe?

Also, what sidewall size should I get so my speedomoter will be accurate? 40? Thanks!

Thats what I run on my car but I have Cobra rims so I dont know if those are wider than stock. 275-40-17s are what you want to buy to keep the speedo accurate.

If your wheels are 17 x 8 dont go wider than 255/45/17
275's will have too much sidewall bulge and will not track straight.

Stock wheels are 17x8. I wouldn't go higher than a 255 SAFELY on a 17x8" wheel. If you have a 17x9 (which isn't a stock size) then you can safely go up to 275. I would also keep the 40 sidewall.

Listen to all the guys with 335's on 17x8" wheels that say "I run them and they're fine" if you want to. I'm just giving you recommended SAFE tires. If you want to run the bigger size, just get you some bigger rims.

I had 275's on my stock 8" wide rims. They fit without alot of hassles but i never got full contact patch on the ground,even running the air pressure low. Don't bother with anything larger than a 255 or 265(depending on brand) unless you're going for a certain look,and not performance.

For an 17x8, the recommended size is 245/45/17 but some guys run 255/45/17's

You can get a 275/40/17 on a 17x8 but it will bulge a lot and handling may suffer depending on sidewall flex.

Damn I really wanted the 275's for more traction. Would a 265 be too big too?

255's will give u more contact patch due to the "buldge" in the tires. I have 275's on my 8" wheel and am getting ready to switch over to 255, 50's taller tire and much better contact. Right now my middle of my tires are worn out and the edges are at 1/3 tread still. (35psi). So save ur money and dont make ur tires sit like a fat lady in a lawn chair!

So you think I'll have more traction with 255 compared to 275 on a 8" rim? Will I have more traction with the 245 compared to the 255?

With 255/45/17 My speedomoter will be 1 mph too slow. Which isn't a problem for me. but I can get some BFG g-force sport's for $114 each....

255 front 275/40 rear. they are fine. bulge depends on brand. Fuzion ZRI's bulge 0.25" on each side. Kuhmo escta MX's bulge 0.45" on each side. Both look really sweet. 275's up front on stock rim will cause more understeer due to tire flex.
Personally, I would stay with a "good" 245/45/17 front vs. a 255. The added width doesnt make any noticable differance. The 245 will be stretched properly and have less sidewall flex thus giving you better turn in and less understeer. Just get a good tire. The Kuhmo's are excellent! Comparable to eagle F1's

I want the same tire size all around. It's cheaper that way, and less hassle. I already have MT's for the track...

I have 255/45/17s on 17x8 wheels. Don't think there is really a gain in traction, but I think the taller sidewall looks a little better.

Ok to clarify.. Traction + Street Tires = Funny joke.


The main difference you will notice is from the brand as stated. I have the crome 99 cobra look a likes that were the option on 02+ cars. My Sumitomo (sp) Htr Z tires buldge real bad and wore funny. But I still got 10k out of them and they have had a real hard life (4.30 gears ) I ran a set of BFG Drag radials on some stock 17 silver wheels the were 275 40. They did not buldge at all.

I am personally switching to the 255's since they are .3 inches taller than the 245 and 275. I know its not much but anything to get some mph back at the end of the 1/4 is worth it.

Personally buy the tires u like and the sizes u want. In the end its your money and your car. Don't ever let anyone tell u different!

Its not cheaper, it just delays the action of buying a set of tires. Replacing 4 tires every 12 months is NOT cheaper than replacing 2 tires every 6 months.

Also, if you do it your way, when you rotate them, you will have bald or close to bald front tires which is extremely unsafe.

And if you own a stang, and like to go fast, you understand that rears dont last. End of story.

If i recall, Ford originally equipped the 94-95 Mustang Cobras with 17x8 wheels and 255/45/17 tires. The GT with the 17x8 got 245/45/17 for that year. In 1996 Ford narrowed to the 245 on all 17" wheel models (except 03/04 Cobra)

i dont put many miles on my stang right now. i doubt i ever will. i drive my FX35 alot due to kids. i drive the stang on saturdays to work and back. my wife and i share the FX35 due to work schedules.

i really love these 275's. i am used to 295's and how fat they look. everytime i look at my car from a different angle, i cant tell that they are 275's. when i look at the rear, they look sweet!!

i plan on hitting the track with the stang soon. i dont plan on doing a burn out. i just want to run cold. i am not after big times or anything..just some fun hauling @ss down the track legally lol!!
