Stupid tire size question...

Kind of embarassed to ask this but man I can't get a straight answer from anyone, so I'll just ask you guys. 245/45/17, the 245 is the diamater right? Whats the 45? I've heard, the lower the number is, the wider the tire is, which made no sense to me... Can someone please clear this up for me, or direct me to a site for dumbasses like myself? Thanks

lets see if i remember...

245= how many mm the sidewall is...
45= the % of overall height which is how wide the tire is??? but i think there is something more to this/??????????????? i think its reversed like 100-45=55 adn thats the % on how wide the tire is?
and 17= rim diamater.

ok, from the top....

P245/45/R17:

P=passenger car tire (not important)
245=width in millimeters
45=%sidewall height to tire width in millimeters. ie 245*45%= 110.25mm
R=radial tire
17=rim diameter in inches

also on the sidewall you will find the speed rating (h/hr/zr/w/etc.), the temp rating (a/b/c), and the wear rating.
