Supercharger Operating Question

Hey guys,
Just bought another mustang, 91 notchback. It seems to be built somewhat right minus the fact I just repaired a head gasket. The car is bored out to the 306 specs has edelbrock heads a trickflow intake 1.6 roller rockers ect. It also has a supercharger ( Vortech V1) which I’m not to knowledgeable about. First off at idle the blower is real loud (so loud it seams not right) and sounds like its wining and then almost gets quieter as the car revs up. I unbolted it and when hand spun it sounds almost like the gears are meshing maybe scratching. Not sure if it is a normal sound or not? How much play is the pulley supposed to have? How much oil is supposed to go to it? I’m also curious about it working correctly because I feel I only get boost pressure when really getting on the throttle. If I’m not on it the gauge reads vacuum or zero. When exactly is the blower get boost? I’m only basing off my buddy’s lightning when the throttle is pressed a little you get a little boost. I talked to Vortech and all they had to say was “well send it to us”. I would rather not do if I don’t have to. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

what your describing sounds perfectly normal to me dude. i have a v1 s-trim running 7 psi and at idle you can hear the thing a block away. thats the nature of a centrifugal blower. and yes when you spin the blower by hand you can hear the gears im assuming its becuase how low it is geared. You cant compare a vortech blower which is a centri blower to a lightning blower which is a roots. they are totally 2 different blowers. The roots blower goes into boost immediately (i used to own a 03 cobra with same blower). the centri blower doesnt kick in right away. They act almost like a turbo. I wont get full boost till about redline. as far as the oil, as long as your gettin oil pressure in your motor, you should be getting oil to your blower. the feed is installed at your oil pressure sensor.
also search on youtube for vortech idle videos

Also, yes the blower noise goes away upon accelerating and you dont hear the "whine" like the roots blowers on boost. Personnally i like the way centri blowers sound on idle always has people next to you at lights saying "wtf is that?"
on a side note, i wander why you blew a headgasket? next we should make sure you are gettin enough fuel. What injectors do you have? how about fuel pump? what size? Do you have a msd btm box to retard timing with boost? If the car was tuned you dont need the box. post up some more details. If you dont know, you should call the previous owner. you shouldnt have had a blown headgasket

Yeah thats exactly how the blower sounds, i think then i might just prefer the roots type but ah as long as i'm making the power. Well i'm going to assume that i have 42lb injectors because i have a fuel pressure gauge that reads 42 lbs. I believe i have a 255lb/hr with the vortech fuel boost pump. I have a boost retard box but i'm not too sure how to operate it. My buddy eddie who is just about finished with the head gasket isn't to sure about it either. I'm not sure if they are related but the car will ping alot lately and will backfire i'm assuming it has to do with timing but i'm guessing it could have to do with the retard. I also feel like i don't have alot of power like the car will surge at low rpm, i also attributed that to bad timing. What you think? Thanks

yeah, you need to get that timing squard away or your just gonna blow another headgasket. as far as the injectors go, the gauge reading 42 psi has nothing to do with injector size. thats just what the cars fuel pressure is set at. look under your intake and see what color the injectors are. if they are ford racing 42 pounders will be green. 24 pounders blue, and 30 pounders i beleive are red

Looks like all the questions have been answered. Just a suggestion though, get it tuned, should run you around $500 including the chip. Make it drive like a stocker, have more power and have a MUCH less chance of blowing headgaskets or doing worse.

I agree with the tune 100%, Made my car a complete different animial when I had it tuned!

I would pick up a UPR boostpipe if the funds will allow it, definitely worth the money!
