Hey guys I'm new to the 5.0 section so please go easy on me lol. I was just wondering what kind of HP the 5.0 can take before the block needs work. For the 4.6, most people recommend getting forged parts after 400WHP. Can the 5.0 block handle this power?

What quarter mile times could be expected from a blown 5.0 (Assuming the car is running 5-9psi, has minor bolt ons, DR's, and good differential). I realize that's a broad statement, but I just want an idea.

What other parts would be needed besides the S/c kit, injectors, fuel pump, tuner?

Thanks for any general info guys!

really anything over 450rwhp the block is on borrowed time... depends on how u drive it and the tune... some split at 400 and some running 550 never had a problem.... all depends... but i would get a aftermark block if u want over 450hp

i would say run low 12's on a basic s/c with 9psi

u would need injectors, upgraded fuel pump, and i would get a tune on it... and depends if u run a FMU

Properly tuned with the s/c and supporting parts you mentioned, I would say, with the right driver, high 11's low 12's.

To give you an idea, with those items, minus the s/c and add in good heads, people hit the 12's.

As far as supporting items...TIME. If you do it yourself, it will take time to get everything (including supporting items) installed and tuned properly.

Also, unfort. 5.0's don't get to use the nice (and cheaper) handheld tuners like SCT/Hypertech that modular guys can use. So expect to pay over $500 for even the most basic tuner.

And if you are going to do the tuning yourself, a wideband O2 is a must.

EDIT: And as for the block...like jaswir said, it depends on how you drive it. Some people will say you can hit insanely high HP numbers on the stock block where others will tell stories of them failing at 300hp.

Motors do break when they are N/A just from driving. stuff like that happens.

The standard limit for the blocks in the 5.0L is 450. I'd keep it to 400 so you don't end up splitting it in half.

A stock motor with a Vortech S/C will put you around 330HP / 350Torque (This is without newer heads and the other goodies)

the pistons in the 5.0L are forged 87-early 92. After that, they went to Hyper's

What do you mean by "run a FMU"? Are there handheld tuners available to tune the car when supercharged? Most people use the Xcal2 and get a dyno tune with the 4.6. What method do most 5.0 guys use?

What amount of boost would be safe on the stock block to stay in the 350-400 WHP area? What kits are available at a good price? Thanks for the replies!

FMU = Fuel managment unit. It's a bandaid used to fix the fuel delivery issues. The stock fuel pump only pumps 88 lt/hr. and the stock Fuel pressure drops as the RPM's increase. So the FMU blocks off the return line to help build pressure in the rails for the charger. But like I said, they are a bandaid. You would really need to get a 255 lt/hr pump and probably some 42# injectors.

The Fox computers are pretty simple but the personal tuning devices are around $500+ Anderson Ford (PMS) is very popular. I'd just take it to the dyno and have a pro look at it once your car is all bolted together, but that is my opinion...

I don't run a boosted setup so I'll let the guys with experience give you the boost level information.

On a stock motor, 9-10 psi should get you around 300-340 depending on tune and fuel. Something else to consider with boost is that if your running DR's or slicks, launching with that much power, something has to give between the tires and engine, ie. the rear/clutch/trans.

What if a new clutch was installed, along with 31 spline axles and differential...could the stock tranny support 300-400 WHP?

So a $500+ tuner would be necessary, as well as a dyno tune? Or can the shop use the chip provided with the SC?

Could the car be driven to the shop with out the tune (assuming I had the right fuel pump + injectors)? Thanks for all the info!

stock tranny wont handle 400-450hp of a abuse... just depends if you powershift it etc... it might last 6 months or less... also people don't have problems for years! just depends on how u treat it...

when u drive it to the tuner just don't go into boost... but i would toe it... like get AAA for 10 bucks a month and they will towe any car up to 100 miles... if u live close to a tuner thats what i would do!
