ok this tranny has been through some hellafide gear banging. well at first the car lost 5th gear(it wont even go into 5th) then the car lost 3rd gear(wouldnt go in). then i was driving one day and gave 3rd gear a shot and voila it went in but grinding. well 5th still doesnt work. but 3rd does ever sense then but grinding everytime i put it in 3rd unless i engage the clutch then disengage then engage and put it in. well i was coming down the road the other day and was ****ing around with another car that was next to me. i was in 2nd gear and i kept peggin it a little at a time(sorta jumping up). well i come to the next stop light and it WILL NOT go in 1st gear, unless i let the clutch out half way. then i turned around and headed home expecting the worst. and every gear change i have to pull soo entirely hard to engage the shifter. well i get infront of my house, and am in 1st gear and i pul up a bit and let off and there is this horrific knockin sorta clunking noise from under the car(sorta middle of the car). so i park it and my moms boyfriend checked it out and when he would engage the clutch and let it out just idling it would make like noise almost like a gear had been eaten up. so i call my dad and he wants to come over to check it out, so i take it for a short ride arond the neighborhood to make sure its still doing it and i go into 2nd gear and totally lose 2nd it just revs like as im not in gear. so i park it and wait. well he gets there and drives it and we decid he will follow me to take it to his house where he can work on it. and do not ask me why im soo iggnorant but, my dad has 96 cobra and pulls next to me and wants to run. i think he thought the tranny was shot and was gonna need replacing anyways so he didnt mind.(the car is his but he gave it to me if that helps). well we take off and out of nowhere 2nd gear works  well he says he thinks maybe the shifter fork is bent or something he says and he doesnt think its getting into gear . but it totally feels like its going into 2nd . iand i was thinkin maybe hes right b/c maybe i got 2nd when i ran him b/c of pulling it so hard that it went in  well hes trying to replace the tranny but i was wondering if you guys knew it was something to do instead of replacing the tranny.my dad is old school and doesnt know much about new cars, and he doesnt know anything about internal shifter forks he knows about external. and myself i dont know much of anything about cars but am trying hard to learn, im 18. well if any of you guys arent totally pissed off b/c i made the story so long(just trying to le you understadnd everythin that happened so no confusion) you will answer my question if you know the answer.
thank you

I don't know how you feel about the DYI thing when it comes to gears, some people don't like the idea of working on transmissions. If the DYI transmission fix idea isn't something that you would rather leave to someone else, here are some resources:

See http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English/onlineorder/product.asp to download a FREE service manual for T5 or Tremec 3550
You will need the Adobe Acrobat viewer which is also a free download – http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

See http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/ or http://www.ddperformance.com/index2.htm for parts

A T5 rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and other small parts costs about $160. It does not include any gears or shafts.

Hanlon also has a video on how to rebuild your T5 or Tremec. If they are out of stock see http://cartapes.com. It costs less than $20, and is worth every penny of it.

I did a Tremec 3550 rebuild, and it wasn't that difficult. The video was an immense help, and I would recommend viewing it. At $20, it will give you an opportunity to look and decide for yourself if you think that it is something you want to try to do.

You will also need a magnetic base and dial indicator to measure the endplay ($20-$40). See http://www.mscdirect.com/PDF.process?pdf=1312&Keyword=Y

The tricky part is that you will need some shims to adjust the endplay in the two shafts: the new bearings will change the clearance. There is no way of telling what it will be until you get to the point that it is time to measure and check the clearances. Halon has the individual shims if you can wait for them. If you can't afford the wait, the auto parts store can sell you some shim stock and you can make your own, or have a machine shop make them for you. The shim stock comes in brass (easy to cut) and steel, in varying thicknesses.

Getting the car jacked up high enough to get the trans jack in and out from under the car was somewhat challenging. Since I didn't have a helper, getting the trans out of the car and back it was one of the more difficult things about the job. I built a trans jack out of 2x6's, some angle iron and a $25 floor jack. If I hadn't done that, I would have needed a helper or to rent a commercial trans jack. At 100+ pounds the Tremec 3550 was far too heavy for me to lift by myself.

From experience. I didnt think it was that hard to rebuild a transmission. So i tried and i was happy with i8t. I get it in the car, and i only had half of my gears. I guess thats why mechanics send transmissions out to get fixed and people who work on trannys only work on trannys. Ill leave it to the professionals next time.

ya i wouldnt mess with t-5's i have run the **** outa mine and the F$%#er wont blow i ride it to 5grand and slam it into 2nd and she is strong as ever (whats up with that? my car is quick and isnt stock why cant i break it?)

Is it just me, or do these problems sound like problems you would have with a bent clutch fork? I had to replace mine because I had similar problems. Note to self: with a Centerforce Dual Friction clutch, you MUST upgrade your clutch fork.

Then again, I HAVE seen T5's blow up in all kinds of odd ways. It could just be shot no matter how you look at it. Stupid Borg-Warner trannies.

I have killed my T5 three two times now in less than 6months!!! And the car is completely stock. I dont power shift, side step the clutch, do clutch dumps, or massive burns outs. Theres a few times where i like to drive fast but i just go through the gears just fine. I have snapped the main shaft in half, and now i killed the 2nd gear cluster compeletly! I really have no idea how i'm doing this. so far theres almost 5K in the tranny and its just stock not a high performance part on it. But anyway I'm just getting a different tranny now. What sucks is the guy who did my tranny isnt going to warrenty it because he said "its been abused" though the rest of the tranny looks fine. the syncros are great, rings, gears, "except 2nd" etc... And i've never missed a gear and i'm the only one that drives the car. So as far as i'm concerned T5's suck. When i bought the car the tranny was gone and i knew it had to be rebuilt. Every part in the tranny is new except the case. So again, I think the tranny sucks and i will never own another T5 world class.

I had the exasct same problems with mine. my friend rebuilt his t5 and ended up with half his gears so i wouldn;t try that. its a lotta wokr to pull things in and out ect... I would simply buy a new one and stick it in. I bought the tremec tko with a spec clutch. http://www.ddperformance.com is where i got mine. took 2 days to arive, cheapest place around.

sounds almost like you have a clutch that wont disengage. do you know anyone who is a truck driver? let him try to shift it if he can shift it you got a clutch problem, but im pretty sure you have synchros that are worn out by now.

i have a 4 cylinder style t-5 im running about 350 hp on. Stripped out 3rd gear once, rebuilt it, dont drop the clutch, and no problems so far got 20k on it since then. I also put limited slip additive into the fluid to knock the gl ratin up a notch
