I called a Mustang only store and explained that I was doing a T5 conversion on a 65 Mustang. It is a 4 speed car already. The guy told me that all I needed was the adaptor plate for the bell housing and the crossmember. He said the slip yokes were the same and the original trans mount was retained.
Well , the slip yokes are not the same and the trans mount will not work. The trans mounts hight prevents it from fitting in between the crossmember and the trans , even if the trans is jacked into the floorboards. The original yoke is too small for the T5. I have the T5 yoke , but the local parts store can't come up with a u-joint that will mount the new slip yoke to the old driveshaft. The trans is out of a 93 Mustang , if it matters. This bites big time because the car is stuck on my lift at work. Can anyone shed some light on this??? I did a search and saw several pictures of what is needed for the swap and they all showed a mount and a slip yoke. I have a Mustangs Unlimited crossmember if it matters.
THANKS !!!!!!!!!! :hail2:

Was your 4sp a T10 or a toploader? I had a toploader and the slip yoke worked fine in the T5. The tranny mount was also the same part (from a toploader), you just use the other holes -- (left & right) instead of the original holes (front and back). I used the ron morris crossmember, but it shouldn't matter which one you use. I also had to shorten my driveshaft 3/4".
Try to look at a toploader/c4 slip yoke and toploader tranny mount at the parts store. IIRC though, early toploaders and maybe t10's were 25 spline and the later ones were 28 spline output shafts.

Lucky me!!!! I've got an early toploader 25 spline. What do I win?? So that explains the slip yoke problem. I'm not sure what your saying about the mount. The one I have has 2 holes and 2 studs. The 2 holes match up to the two threaded holes in the trans and the two studs go thru the crossmember. As best I can see , there is no other option. Thanks much for the reply.
Has any one else encountered this mount problem or found a u-joint that will mate the 65 driveshaft to the 93 yoke?? (93 yoke is shorter , btw, and it looks like if I can get a u-joint , I won't have to shorten the driveshaft.

Thanks. The holes line up pretty good. The problem is that to get the mount in place , the trans is plastered up against the floorboards.

That is because there is no way the factory crossmember can be used unless you cut a notch out of the built in upper crossmember to let the rail shifter boss move farther up. I did this and reboxed in the crossmember to retain strength. I also modified a stock crossmember since the T-5 sits farther back and I lowered the mounting point just a little to maintain the proper 3 degree drivetrain angle. You can buy a commercially available crossmember but it sits lower so no cutting of the upper crossmember is necessary and it results in an improper drivetrain angle. The mount I use is the C4 mount for the year of the vehicle (heck this mount was used on just about every vehicle that ever had a C4!). Good luck.

The crossmember I am using is specifically made for this conversion. I looked at a picture of the mount which is supposed to fit and it does look shorter in the picture. My car may have had the wrong mount on it to begin with. I hope the auto parts store has one to compare. Thanks again for the help.

On my conversion I used the 66 transmission mount. At first I got a mount for a late mustang (to match the transmission0 and it was too tall. The early mount is shorter.

Yes the early mount it the ticket here, I used a c4 trany mount and it works great. From what the driveshaft shop told me, original u-joints for 65-66 stangs had 1" cups on all four sides. I'm sure a local shop can mate and balance the yoke to your d/s for you. I just went ahead and had a new one built form parts the guy had laying around. I'm pretty sure the yoke was a 28 spline too.

The original trans mount was wrong ( maybe thats what caused the intense vibration??? ). I got the right 1 2day and everything is in place. Still closer 2 the floor than i would like, but ill see what happens. 1 ujoint from being mobile!!!
