T5 experts

It is to my understanding that the 94-95 cobras and GT both have the T5 but i heard in the Cobras that somthing was coated on the Cobra version of the tranny(possibly synchros?), Is this true? ALso what is this small difference and does it make it stronger. Do the t5 rebuild kits have this piece that is different also? the 94-95 t5 trannies are rated at 300lbs of torque or 330 i always get confused

Its not worth much talking about. They are all very weak transmissions. I havent seen it talked about in any rebuild kits so it must not be worth it. I believe that 95 cobras had a steel bearing retainer, which is better than the aluminum ones that the GTs come with, dont quote me on that though.

#1.) The Cobra T-5 has stronger bearings that are true roller bearings. It has Timken tapered roller pocket bearings.

#2.) The Cobra T-5 has phosphate coated gears.

#3.) Not sure, but I've heard some say the Cobra T-5 has a lower 1st gear. I dunno... but I think they have the same 3.35 gear as the GT.

SO why are there no cobra specific rebuild kits? I never seen anything like that. I know that its just the bearings but how is that giong to make it any stronger. The stress is on the gears themselves and the clutching teeth to some degree. I dont see how a better bearing will make it stronger, smooth sure, but not any stronger.

Ford Racing offers a T-5 rebuild kit and also sells the specific input and speed gears needed to upgrade a normal T-5 to World Class (330 ft.-lbs. torque capacity). The only downside is that the gear ratios move slightly lower numerically.

Cobra ratios:

1st - 3.35
2nd - 1.99
3rd - 1.33
4th - 1
5th - 0.68

World Class ratios:

1st- 2.95
2nd - 1.94
3rd - 1.34
4th - 1
5th - 0.63

You really answered yourself on that one. That's why you don't see Cobra specific rebuild kits..... because it wasn't "really" any stronger. Plus there are so many other better upgraded rebuild kits.... what would be the point in making/selling the Cobra specific one?

True, i dunno i just figured people would want to have the "cobra" or something. It it was really a better thing, but yea i guess i did answer my answer my own question.

so then im assuming stock 94-95 T5s are rated at 300lbs and rebuild kits are made for 330lbs or what? or different gear sets are rated at 330? And so that means we dont have the world class tranny?

no they are rated at 300ftlbs really weak. The only truly strogner gear set is the g-force kit. All transmissions after 1986 are "world class" its just a newer design.

Ak2 2.95 gearset rates it at 330lbs

but here http://www.ddperformance.com/common_ask_questions.htm

it says

Q. Why won't the 2.95 Transmission work in my 1994 or 1995 car ?

A. The input shaft's in the 94-95 cars is 5/8 longer. An input was never made for the the 94-95 cars with a 2.95 first gear.

so im guessing that is not an option for us anyways......
Its the same thing if you wanted to put a fox T5 in your car. You would need to switch to a Fox bellhousing and a fox clutch fork and get a DS spacer. Because the fox has a shorter input shaft.
