Is there any way I can identify a T5 to figure out what year it came out of even though the ID tag is missing? Tooth count or any other kind of reference. I was told this T5 I bought came out of an 94 mustang, but I have my doubts, I have the whole trans torn down so counting teeth or finding id numbers is no problem.

there will be a designation on the cluster shaft between the two left most gears on the shaft part. For example, the one I'm rebuilding right now says 052, which is the designation for the pre 90 type world class transmission.

going to astroperformance.com go to his stuff for sale, and compare those #'s with the pics of cluster shafts he has. the pic I have below of the trans I'm building now would be indicative of 34-31-23-15-15 Tooth Cluster Gear
Part# 1352-077-052 that info should give you what you need.l Furthermore, according to his page, you should have an 068 if yours is an sn95 trans.

as well, the input shaft on the 94/95 v8 wc transmissions are a good deal longer than the fox shafts, maybe by .75 or so. If you need, let me know, I've got a 94 trans out there I can measure the input shaft for you, and several fox t5's to compare with.

Well the input retainer, and the bearing between the input shaft and first gear syncro was destroyed. The guy said he was told the trans was rebuilt, but shortly after the trans was put in the car it started making noises. I also discovered the input shaft is the fox length one, I bought a new one for a fox and they are the same length, I also bought a new steel input bearing retainer, Im just waiting for more funds so I can get the rebuild kit.

Im thinking its either not originaly from an sn95, or someone rebuilt it with the wrong input shaft, and since the input shaft was too short, it wouldn't go into the pilot bearing, so it whipped around and desroyed itself.

Thanks for the info, I'll go check it out.

what a bummer, you're dealing with the same trans I am, don't you hate when people don't know what they're dealing with?

does the high alloy cluster upgrade the whole trans to the 90+ specs or only that part? Havn't got into throwing upgrades at them yet, as this is my first one.

I called hanlon motorsports today and got the info about changing the trans to a 90+ spec. In order to change a 85-89 to the 90+ spec, you have to change the cluster gear to the 068 one and 2nd and 3rd gear. So it looks like this is going to cost me more than I thought.

damn, that's interesting. On the one I'm building now, I already replaced 2 and 3rd, as well as a shift fork and a 1-2 slider, but that damn cluster costs $200 new, no way in hell is it worth that + what another $175 for second and third, I'd rather start with a good 90 trans to start with. Good info though, wonder if you can score the good used cluster from ebay.

also, isn't the 068 the designation for the sn95 trans cluster?

From what I've been reading the 068 designation is for 90+. Hanlon motorsports sells the whole 068 cluster kit which includes the 2nd and 3rd gear for $280. I've been checking out a few other sources like ebay, and I think I can piece something together for about $230-$240. I bought this trans thinking it was from a 94, so even though I now know that its not, I still want the 300ft-lb tourqe rating, so at this point its worth it to me to upgrade it to 93 cobra specs which will bring it up to 310ft-lbs. Im going to rebuild the t5 in my car right now after I get this one finnished, and sell it, and if I can turn a decent profit, I may start rebuilding them on the side to make a little extra cash.

lol, that's the exact same thing I've planned too, and why I stopped selling parts on the side :)

trust me, there is a LOT of profit to be had in rebuilding these.

Yeah I remember you mentioning that on FEP, I wasn't sure how profitable or easy it would be, but now since I've torn down a couple T5s I think it may be well worth it to do this as kind of a small side buisness. The great thing about this is the variety of different set ups you can build, so you can market to people wanting a stock replacement and people wanting something that'll handle 600+hp, or even people wanting something for road courses.

my father is an aerospace engineer, and ultimately I'd like him to help design our own "g force" kit, but for t5's, t45's and 3650's. currently I've got several t5's, and two t45's laying around in line. As soon as we master the t5, we're gonna tackle the t45.

average ebay price is $650-$700 for a rebuilt + core charge. I figure average rebuilt COST is $150-$400, leaving a potential profit of hundreds for a couple of hours of labor (when you get good at it) many people local complain of no one wanting to touch a t5 for less than a grand, hell, that's what you pay for skilled labor, not everyone can build a trans eh?
