Hey all, im not sure what exactly is going on here. But im haveing a grind when i punch into second gear. Under normal driveing conditions their is no grind. Only when im really getting on it. I was messing around on my way to work yesterday . And when i shifted, it had a small grind. i thought i wasnt clutching it right. So i did it again this time i was sure i had the clutch down. It still grinded, i got scared so i stopped messing with it and just took it easy. Then after i got out of work on that same road i got the gutts to try it again. Only this time there was no sign of a grind. Wich leads me to my question. could this be clutch related? or a bad sincro?I dont remember what the guy b4 me installed for a clutch. I think it was a centerforce. Its stiff as a betch tho

Are you having any problems getting the car into gear/reverse when you are at a stop? If so you likely have a clutch cable adjustment/stretching problem. This can be cured by a new cable, quadrant and firewall adjuster. This will not only help you fine tune your clutch engagement...but it will make the pedal effort much less!!!

If its not that then you likely have a band synchro...hate to say it. Time for a rebuild...damn those t-5's

Yes it grinds all the time. i usually have to go through every gear before hitting reverse.. Im not to knowledgeable about the stangs but was it 90+ they put world class t-5's?

If its just reverse, thats questionable. Do like the other guy stated. Start with the fw adjuster and quadrant. Many many trannys you have to bang another gear before tapping reverse. I have to in my new tko trans

that problem started for me only in third then got worse even though I started to baby it, the clutch was grabbing properally though, end story she needed a rebuild. even after the rebuild sometimes I still need to put it into another before reverse, I think thats pretty much normal.

I had a hard time getting it in reverse today. it wasnt grinding it just wouldnt go in. so i held the shifter to reverse slightly letting off the clutch and it went into gear no problem.. Just another clue to the t-5 problem. transmissions isnt really my thing

False... reverse with always grind in a mustang unless you put it into another gear first. Reverse is an unsynchronized gear and will grind when you try to place it into gear right away at a stop. It will become second nature to mustang drivers to go up into 5 then down into R . It will work like butter. The second gear grind you hear is very common and is the result of people pulling back hard on the 1-2 shift, the problem is also worsened by the stock shifter not having stops resulting in the shift to be overextended which damages the synchro's

There is nothing false about what i said actually. I didnt say just reverse...i said GEAR/reverse. I was just asking if he was having problems getting into any gear while the car is STOPPED...not just reverse. I know that reverse is unsynchronized...but you know what? mine doesnt grind into reverse unless the car is moving. How bout that?

What i said is valid...and he should check these things and follow my directions before replacing his clutch or rebuilding his trans. They are cheaper, easier, and quicker. thanks

if you could give us an idea where your clutch is grabbing, like right off the floor or way up top. This will help us give you an idea about your clutch cable adjustment procedure wether to toght or loose. off the floor or up high isn't good, both will cause you problems. you want to be close to 1/2 way or maybe 2-3 inches off the floor.

remember this when adjusting if you adjust and get the cable to loose it will grab off the floor=no good. If you adjust it to tight it will let off really high almost at the top = no good and wear on the throw out bearing.

good luck keep us posted.

It lets off 3/4 off towards the top. I havent been haveing any problems today or yesterday slamming second. I was under the car the other day. and it looks as if trans fluid is leaking. Im about to put it up on a lift a little later and check to see if it is low.

3/4's isn't awful, you could fine tune. the other thing I did after my rebuild was get a short throw from mgw one of the best shifters out there. it has the stops on it and it improves shifting a ton. Black87ttop gave a good point about not having the stops and the stock shifter allowing you to get deep into the shift so to speak and mashing the whole gear. becareful how much "slamming" you do on an older T5 or one you don't know alot about the history of, you are asking for big problems these aren't very strong tranny's from the get go.

How much does a transmission rebuild usually cost? I was thinking about getting myself a tko transmission but i wasnt sure on how much they cost and i read some reviews on them being strictly for track use and hard to drive for a daily car. Does anyone know of anycompany's that remanufacture transmissions and would accept a CORE for a cheeper buyy
