So I just got my 3.27's installed. Car feels MUCH better then with the 2.73's. Anyways, my friend wanted to run me against his 2001 Cobra. Cobra is stock, 3.27's, no mufflers, BBK CAI. I have under drive pulleys, off road H, dynomax mufflers, 1.7:1 roller rockers and my 3.27's. Nothing more. No weight reduction on either cars, two people in each car. Frist run, I got a good launch, minimal spin. Had him to 60, missed 3rd, he flys by. Second run, poor launch, we both spin. Side by side till top of second, he puts like 1 car on me. Shift to third, I hold even, then WALK by him with ease. I can't see how the things I have done would give the 5.0 enough hp to compete with a 320hp car. The Cobra was 3,100lbs on a local certified scale, the GT is supposed to be 3,500lbs. Cobra also ran consistant 13.5's at a local track. What do you guys think?

Not meaning to offend, but maybe your friend can't drive as well as you.

See, I didn't think it was this heavy either.. Just going by what I read.

Here is another strange thing. The cobra has also raced another 88 5.0. It was a convertable with cam/intake manifolds/cold air/headers/exhaust/3.73's and the cobra beat it by like 2 cars. I can't see how my car would be quicker then one with that much crap done to it. He is using an E303 cam which is supposedly a pretty good match with stock heads. Dunno. Maybe someone did something more to my car then I know. The heads I know for sure are stock... and I don't think anyone did a cam or anything. Never know.

Be happy with it. If he ran 13.5 and you walked him up top and held him down low, you might be in the lower 13s. Take it to the track and dont rely on street runs to determine ANYTHING!

LOL at the Cobra being 3100 pounds and only running those times and getting pulled. It better have ALOT of weight reduction and a solid axle. They weigh ALOT more than 3100 stock and your car is ALOT lighter than 3500. You are a good 200-300 pounds or more lighter all else being equal. My 88 GT was 3260 with me in it with the spare in it, no sway bar and radio with 1/8 of a tank of gas.

My friend's all bolton 93 Notch would pull out on my friend's 97 Cobra that has filter, offroad h pipe and flowsmasher catback from a 40 roll, pull out some more in third and then BLAM he shifts to fourth and the Cobra comes right by still in third gear by half a car and they shut down.

When did you let off? If you let off in third you didnt even run a 1/4 mile and could have been about to get passed back but oh well thats racing! With the Cobra having stocker gears and not many mods I could see you rollin by him for awhile from a stop race.

3.73's and an E303 eh, depending on the car, alot of guys that just toss that stuff in dont run any faster than a tall geared stock HCI car, well it depends on other mods and the mentality of the driver. Did they roll race? If they ran from a roll and the Cobra beat that vert, that has no basis on your race since you ran from a stop. If they ran from a stop it doesnt matter because if the vert spun more than you did when you ran the Cobra, that means he would have lost to you too more than likely.

Hell my friend had a bolton 3.08 geared stock HCI 87 GT and he took out ALOT more modded 5.0 cars that had b cams, intakes, blah blah. He ran 8.43@82.13 and then ran a 8.42@82.xx with 1.7 roller rockers and a T5Z bogging like hell.

Turns out his girlfriend put some regular fuel in it and thats why it was cutting out some. We went back out last night. He had premium and three bottles of octane booster. With a good launch on his part, he had me by two cars at the end of "the quarter". If I got a good launch and he kinda bombed the launch, he only got one car.

you went from 2.73 to 3.27? dont mean to laugh but, haha!

With a good driver and traction your car is probably a high 13 second car, take traction away from both cars and put a horrible driver in the cobra and its possible, even if it was a bad driver though I dont think you should have walked him "with ease", he should be walking you, but oh well, the highgear may have helped you out on the roll, but eith way the driver in the cobra SUCKS.

The gears were free, laugh all you want. The rear end was run low on oil, the clutch packs were burnt, and it was leaking. I figured while I was in there, I would ditch the 2.73's for my 3.27's. It made a big difference. The car runs quite strong especially for just exhaust and 1.7:1 rr's. With the correct fuel in the cobra, he gets me by 2 cars from a dig. On a roll, depending on the speed, I can hang with him or pull a touch occasionally. It really depends on speed. The Cobra has quite a bit more top end.

If I had a dollar for everytime I heard a Mustang owner tell me their car runs really strong for the mods it has, Id be a wealthy man. If it does take her to the drag strip and get some numbers for it. Everyone has a fast car, but to be able to prove it is all the better!

Now go have fun and come back with some timeslips!!! :thumb:

Hell I'll give my 3.08's away for free dosent mean someone should use them. You do know 3.27's came factory on some automatic mustangs right? Im just saying if your already in there spend 150 bucks and get a set of good gears, making it worth your effort. I went from 3.08 gears to 3.73 and honestly didnt feel a thing.

Yes, I know they are "factory" gears. Thats part of the reason I put them in there to begin with. While you may not have registered any gains on the ole ass dyno, these 3.27's definately helped over the 2.73's. No doubt about it.

You know not every car is running top notch. My fox was running 16.8's consistantly when i first bought it due to serious MAF problems.
