Temp. Sending unit question

I got my autometer mechanical gauges in yesterday. I noticed the sending unit for the tempature gauge is 1/2'' thread. What is the size of the stocker? I am thinking 1/4'' , but wanted to make sure. If I have to use an adapter on the mechanical sender to get down to 1/4'' thread will the "probe" still be far enough down in the coolant to reads properly?

What port on the motor are you trying to use?

autometer makes an adapter for it. I had to get one when I put my mechanicals in.

for a red anodized one it is autometer part #2272
for just a brash one it is autometer part # 2263

Seems to me that the gauge comes with the adapter for a SBC, but not for a Ford.

I betcha that the parts store gauge aisle has a kit of adapters for 5-7 bucks, and one of those would work..........

3/8 NPT is the stock thread size.

Will using an adapter still allow the tip of the probe to be submersed in the coolant?

It has been awhile, but it seems to me one almost has to use an adapter, or the probe can move up and down (enough to leak).

You should be able to see how far the probe dangles past the adapter and measure/eyeball it. Unless it looks rediculous, I wouldnt think twice about it (it is just an actual tee fitting, where the coolant alcoves around the probe, where issues arise with radiant readings).

Just MHO.

Ahh I think I get it now. There are two pieces with the gauge the blue one on the tube attatched to the gauge and then a red one that goes in the intake. It shows in the instructions that you install the red part into the intake then the blue part (which holds the probe) screws into it. I was thinking that since the red part is for a SBC you would use an adapter on it. But I guess the right way to do it would be just replace the red fitting with one threaded to fit a SBF. First time with mechanicals so I am winging it.

Oh, I see your point now. You are absolutely right with your thinking. Ditch the fitting that came with it and run a new adapter that has male threads for the intake (Jerry said 3/8", which sounds good to me) and a female threads to receive the probe fitting (I think it is blue for you). The new adapter replaces the Red (SBC) fitting altogether. Otherwise, you are right - that would be stupid to use 3 fittings.

Yep that's what I'm thinking. Jerry thanks for the thread size and RYC CUKR thanks for the part numbers. I ordered the fitting I need and I think I will be set for the install now. :SNSign:
