And there black these days... So your not stuck with a blue one...Another really good coil is Standard Ignition’s Blue Streak.

Gotcha. Instead of rebuilding, is it easier just to replace the distributor with a new one? If so, what distributor should I get and from where? Not sure if the cost is the same to ‘rebuild’ once labor and parts are included. This why I said replace all three at the same time but to also check the wiring and to get all 3 smp from O'Reilly's if ones local, most people can not test a pip since the don't have a scope to watch the wave form signal, most shops don't even have one these days and will do exactly what you just did. They end up doing the easy tfi and coil and chasing an issue buying a cheap china loaded distributor and then giving up. Warranty the tfi's, buy an lx222 and pay a shop to rebuild the distributor if you don't have a press and puller set or the old Hexton 415 tool. The distributor needs to be disassembled to replace the ignition pick up, the gear needs to be pressed on and off to get to the pip, the wiring needs to be checked before you finish the repair and start it, wiggle test while checking continuity, visual inspect etc, 30 plus year old wiring you can't just trust it as being ok, many will rub threw and short in the section that runs under the intake and other parts of the harness. If you’re killing 2 TfI's in 5mins something is not happy, they should be identical parts under the cover plate.
I am fighting a no start no spark issue as well. I replaced the entire distributor with a Duralast unit with full warranty instead of pressing off the old distributor wheel and replacing the PIP. Figured a brand new unit would be better. I do have PIP signal nowGotcha. Instead of rebuilding, is it easier just to replace the distributor with a new one? I saw an MSD distributor that looked reasonable priced.I am fighting a no start no spark issue as well. easier yes, worth it probbaly not, the new distributors are bottom of the barrel China $10 parts marked up to $80-$300 retail depending on who brands it I don't care if its AutoZone or the msd Street fire one (their billet one isn't that good either), its the same rich porter casting and cheap bearing design. They come with cheap electronics, a bearing that likes to seize up, roll pins that are pretty much pot metal and the gear isn't even a press fit. I have one that I use just as a spare Fd17, I wouldn't trust it if it gets driven hard and I replaced the pot metal roll pins. Oem is bushed, no bearing and press fit, way better part....Gotcha. That is a 10 dollar Chinese part.....Same part, no sticker different ecthing on the same exact casting, same cap same rotor...... https://www.ebay.com/itm/3343264715...d=link&campid=5335821607&toolid=20001&mkevt=1I saw an MSD distributor that looked reasonable priced.

I'm just thinking it might be easier to get a new distributor with the TFI module installed already, rather than trying to find something that will work with something 30 years old. I did jiggle the wires with the old module installed and the car ran the same, no issues.
This is the one I have now. I'm searching all over the place for this part number and keep getting the "newer" replacement part number. I called ford and they said they could get this one for $178 but, i doubt it's this exact one.You have a miss fire with the current tfi but it still works, and you killed two motorcrafts in under 6 mins, one just branded by napa what's the current tfi your trying to replace? Can you take a picture of it? It runs but miss fires right.
I'm guessing the current tfi just has the stamped internal leads that can handle the draw from the issue. Where the motorcraft won't by design and acted like a fuse.
Thanks. Also going to check out some salvage yards. Maybe someone has one that has very low mileage Only place your finding those is Nos, the leads inside the older motorcraft can handle more draw then the new ones if you look at the guts thread, betting they melted on the new ones. Just Finding one won't fix it.
Great info. Thanks!!I went through this locating a spare for my Coupe in the salvage yards and made a list of all the cars that had the distributor body that would work. This list is only meant for locating the body not the electronics. I grabbed a Ford TFI and PIP and then just set it all aside rather than assembling one. I have not done this in a few years so going off memory (tried a search and came up with nothing) but if you find a complete Mustang distributor you can test it by unplugging the TFI from the distributor in your car and plug it back in to the used one, put the car in neutral or park, turn the ignition on, go back out under the hood and spin the distributor gear and you should hear the injectors fire. Someone correct me if I am wrong or missing step here. I did this years ago chasing an ignition issue which turned out to be the PIP.
Anyhow here is the distributor body list (corrections or additions are welcomed):
