TFS Stage 1 cam with stock heads

hi,

I have an explorer intake, 1.7 crane rockers, full mac exhaust, 3.73's, crane ignition...is it worth it to change the stock cam to a tfs stage 1? I have one i picked up for cheap...just curious if it's worth it to make the swap. Heads are stock and will be for awhile. Other mods in signature below. thnx

Don't waste your money. If anything get a set of heads before a cam. The stock heads are a major bottle neck. The stock cam is actually pretty good!

+1 .....not to mention, your stock springs won't handle a tfs with 1.7 rockers

Agree with the last two posts. Don't bother swapping cams when you have unported stock heads. Better to swap heads first. Stock cam with 1.7 RR's is pretty stout anyway.

I swapped to the TFS1 when my motor was out, nothing more than it and some headers and it ran like a champ! I swapped the valve springs out as well which wasnt that big a deal. If you plan on swappin heads later on, do it then cause then you wont spend money on springs that wont be used long.

I've seen stock-cam builds make almost 400hp (crank) NA. Swapping to an aftermarket cam for anything but the lopey idle with stock heads is futile... You might see a whopping 5hp.

Now if you had aftermarket heads- that's a different story.

thanks for the feedback. I've decided to get a set of gt40p heads with ugraded valve springs. It should match well with the explorer intake, crane 1.7s, and TFS stage 1. Hope to have installed in a few weeks. thnks.

If you get the "P" heads the #7 and#6 sparks plugs are a pain in the a$$ to get to. #7 is impossible and you better get some plug wire insulators and I learned this from experience! Just my .02

It all depends on what headers you're using.

Yeah I know but if he is using the ones in his sig he will run into the same ordeal I did! But the P specific header is the way to go if you can afford them!

Yeah if he uses the shorties he probably won't be able to even bolt them on without hitting the plugs. Long tubes on the other hand will be ok.

I used the stock HO cam with ported heads on a fresh build and the car was pretty stout with that setup. I installed a Ford Racing cam and it did boost performance but it differnt ways. I wish I went with the TFS cam!

I had to have a plug socket "fashioned" to change the plugs now but other than buying wire insulators that is the only problems I have ran into with the shorties on the P heads!

Yeah I know but if he is using the ones in his sig he will run into the same ordeal I did! But the P specific header is the way to go if you can afford them!

I just updated my sig. I have motorsport headers now. I had them swapped out about 2 months ago.
