I had a question... the smog pump is something that alot of people refer to, but i'm not exactly sure what it is and what it does... i know it must help with "smog" but how...? i also hear it's good to remove it? so can someone tell me what it is, what it does, and if i should take the time to remove it and how to do it? haha man, that sounds like alot...... thanks for anything! :spot:

The SMOG pump is an air pump, it pumps air into the catalytic convertors to help them burn off excess fumes or whatever, in turn your car polutes less.

It's located below the alternator, and has hoses going to 1) a metal tube that goes into the back of each head and 2) a metal tube that runs to your H-pipe.

It cleans the engine bay up, and may ad 1-4? hp if you remove it, but i wouldn't bother if you have to e-test every two years. If you don't have to e-test, i would scrap it, but keep the equipment in the garage because you'll have to e-test sooner or later!

It is mounted right under your alternator and pumps air into the cats to help with emmisions. I removed mine because it locked up and a short belt was alot cheaper than a new pump. You won't feel any power increase from removing it, but it does clean up the engine bay a bit. Removing it and the hoses that go to it also makes it easier to change the rear plug on the passenger side. It is up to you if it is worth the time to remove or not, but if mine hadn't froze up I probably wouldn't have taken it off.

ON EDIT: Me and Mavrick must have typed our replies at the same time. He is correct if you have to do emmisions I would keep it on. I alwyas forget about that because I have never had to deal with emmisions testing.

It makes air that helps reduce the pollution in some way I cannot get in to technical detail but it helps with the emmisions. Yes you can remove it but in certain places it may be illegal to do so. It is pulley driven so it reduces power that is why people remove it. Mine is long gone along with anything associated with it in the engine bay. Sorry for the pitiful explanation to it's function but thats the easiest I can say it, someone else may tell it better.
