I got to thinking about all the things I have done wrong.

I base these wrong things from some of the peeps I've seen over the years
who participate on the various forums. I'd give a time range that I've made
these observations from about 1995 to the present.

Perhaps you have seen them as well :)
These peeps make up a group I would give the name of ..... "They"

"They" said you can't do this :(
and
"They" said you can't do that :(

To that I say
You can't always believe what ... "They" ... say :nono:

This post is NOT about I know more than that group
This post IS about thinking beyond what ... "They" ... say :D

An old but proven example of "They" thinking :)

Once upon a time they said to get from point A to point B
You needed a horse and those CAR things will never catch on

Here is a list of things ... I did ... They said ... Not to do :eek:
and
A few things I did ... They ... Did not ;)

1) I used 3.73's instead of 3.55's
2) I used a mid length runner upper intake instead of the longest runner
3) I used LT's instead of shorty headers
4) I used the SN elbow setup instead of the Fox conversion setup
5) I used 30lb injectors instead of 19's or 24's
6) I used the stock fuel pressure regulator instead of afpr
7) I used a stock throttle body instead of a 65,70, or 75
8) I used a stock maf instead of a 75, 77, or 80
9) I used a catted mid pipe instead of an off road pipe
10) I used the stock 94-95 catback instead of aftermarket catback
11) I used all 3 ud pullies instead of only 2 or none
12) I used a cai made from pvc instead of metal
13) I used Fox VC's instead of aftermarket VC's
14) I used cork end gaskets on the China Wall instead of RTV bead
15) I used lock washers on my LT's instead of aftermarket locking bolts
16) I used heater hose instead of the stock two rail hard cooling tubes
17) I used brass screw valves for block draining instead of the stock plugs
18) I used the 94-95 pcm instead of a Fox pcm
19) I used the Cobra j1j4 pcm instead of the GT t4m0
20) I used a 325 dollar custom cam instead of a Ford alphabet cam
21) I used AFR heads instead of TFS heads
22) I used stud mounted rockers instead of pedestal
23) I used an Edelbrock intake instead of a Cobra
24) I used a Pioneer SFI hb instead of a Romac
25) I used self tuning instead of having a Pro burn a chip

I'm sure there are other hose ups I could find they said not to do
or
They did not do ... At the time ... I did it

Hopefully ... You get the idea ... Things change ... Over time

Some of the time ... Not following the masses

Thinking outside the box can be a good thing :nice:

Sooooo ... I say this to the newer members on our forum getting in
this hobby as a way to give some kind of encouragement :banana:

I might not have done everything correctly with my combo :shrug:
but
It turned out better than I expected :D

Would I do a few things differently if I did it again ;) You Bet :Word:

1) went from 2.73's to 3.55's to 3.90's to 3.27's.
2) took my car to a shop that charged me $1200 to tell me my maf needed programming.
3) Removed stock mufflers on the 5.0 and boomed myself several headaches.
4) Professional products fuel rail. BAD MOVE.
5) Gave away too much stock stuff.
6) Bought my FRPP 65mm tb for $265 and sold it for $150 for a bigger one. Then hating it.
7) Bought a second FRPP 65mm TB because it was by far the best quality and sold it again to go fox.
 
Grady, after 4 or so years, I'm still just wrapping my head around your weird poetic hyper extended haiku looking posts! I can only determine that you're typing on a tiny computer monitor with the resolution pumped way down and you hit enter when the text gets close to the edge of the screen.

I'm interested in #7 and #8. Ever wonder how much, if at all, they are limiting the performance by staying smaller? I know you probably like the stock MAF since you have a good mass air flow transfer curve in the TwEECer already, but do you think you could see any gains from a new one with flow numbers? It's an interesting question if you put the dollar per performance on it since it's probably very high. For me, it will always come down to SOTP differences, so will you FEEL 10-15hp if you are already at 300? If so, is it enough difference to be worth $400+?
 
#3 did you ask about passing e test before you put them
#9 is that an h or x and why,
#20 your custom cam ,wish you did something more for fi ,lsa,lift,etc?
#21 ported them ,different hg,things for future mods?



i myself never seem to save the money and wait for the deal i wanted
when i look back and say why didnt i keep that car ,or save for mods etc
 
1) i selected long tubes that hang too low instead of mid-length headers
2) i tried to use a stock computer to control the 4R70W instead of going straight to a manual valve body
3) i got coil overs, struts, and c/c plates that don't like each other and rattle

keith, you went back to 3.27s? how do you like them?

Not really ... but ... kinda sorta :)

They were put at the bottom of the ... mods to do list ... simply because
they deliver so little gain for the money spent :notnice:

While we are talking about ... Go for amount of Dough (thats a bit poetic) :D
I'd also place the oem catback in that very same category ;)

FYI ... I've since upgraded 7&8 and from mid range, things start to pull
hard and it gets more noticeable throughout the rpm's until redline :nice:

If I was to guess how much the oem tb, maf, & catback held me back
I'd say 10 to 15 rwhp.

The oem curve did not have any reason to do with my using the oem
meter as I had changed it up a good bit anyway to make it work with
the additional airflow and fuel needs of the new combo.

We talked about the gain from an upgrade above.

I based many of the decisions about building my combo with a focus on
that very point you bring up here ;)

As for the old ... Seat Of The Pants Meter :D

It is my general thinking that .....

5 rwhp is not gonna be noticeable :(
10 rwhp is gonna be pretty subtle but noticeable :scratch:
15 rwhp is gonna be fairly noticeable but nothing to write home about :)

Of course ... other butts could possibly sense different results
depending upon experience and wishful thinking is always
a factor to be concerned about when using this commonly
used method of combo evaluation :D

Yes I did :D

As a matter of fact ... Passing the annual state of Texas roller emissions
testing was one of the main goals for my combo :nice:

I have all emissions equipment in place and in good working order which
has allowed me to pass that test each year since 2003 ;)

#9 is that an h or x and why,

Its a Mac catted long tube header h pipe

I had a Bassani catted x pipe and shorties with my previous combo

Quite frankly ...
It just didn't sound like good old fashion American Muscle to me :nono:
so
Since the gain between x & h is 6 one way & 1/2 a dozen the other :shrug:

This is one time I did not place power production over all other issues :D

#20 your custom cam ,wish you did something more for fi, lsa,lift,etc?

Well ... at the time I specified my desires and expectations to Ed .....

I knew I could tame a fairly radical cam with tuning based upon research
but
Researching a thing and doing it ... Its not the same kinda thing ;)

I found that even though my lsa is a bit low at 109 .....
I got better results with my self tuning efforts than I expected :nice:

So Yes ... If I did it over again ... I'd go more radical with cam specs :)

I can't say I'd do anything different with the heads
but
I would have that lower ported a bit

Since my oem block was fairly fresh at 50k miles ... I used it ;)
but
I'd like to see the same done with a B & B'ed 306

Believe me ... I understand all too well :D

I've built countless combos in the past with many compromises :(

however

With this one ... I had several specific goals in place :Word:

I did not loose focus or compromise with things except minor ones
that could be easily dealt with at a later time when money was
more readily available.

Wow! It's not every day you see Grady starting a thread :D

My regrets:

1) NOT HAVING A PLAN!!!
2) 3.73's for a daily driver (3.55's or 3.27's would be nicer)
3) 1.5" Lowering springs for a DD (should have used the Mach 1 springs I had instead of selling them to JT) :rolleyes:
4) Offroad H pipe for a DD (should have gotten a high flow catted pipe)
5) Tubular upper/lower control arms in back for a DD (poly bushings are hell)
6) Waiting over a year to tint the windows on a black car with black leather in TEXAS :nono: :bang:
7) Buying a black on black car and living in Texas. Be assured my next SN95 5.0 will be a Crystal White coupe or convertible with tan seats!
8) Wasting money on goal-less mods instead of bang for the buck mods (spending over $1000 on suspension parts for a car that was autocrossed 3 times, could have gone towards a budget H/C/I)

The (few) good things I did:

1) Cobra headlights
2) MGW shifter
3) Subframe connectors

Too bad I didn't have this thread a looooong time ago, great idea Grady!
 
1. bought 3-chamber flowmasters two months later bought 2-chambers
2. bought red carbon fiber accent pieces assuming it would be red and black not read and pink.... :nonono:
3. bought a shift kit and shifter for a auto car which blew the tranny
4. bought non OEM chrome wheels which peeled.

in retrospect i think i learned all my lessons with the red stang so i wouldn't make them with this car. as near as i can tell i haven't bought anything that i regreted on this car....so far....
 
Things I have done right: Listen to many of you. I regret very little and I have been pretty good about my mods.

Things I have done wrong: Not budgeted enough from the household budget so I get to do more benchracing than real wrenching/racing.
 
hmm not saying i did it wrong but buying the car i did. I could have prolly gotten one in better shape BUT then it wouldn't be the Mystery Machine.

Waiting so long to fix it when it breaks down. That also isn't all my fault i con't really control that I have no money cuase my other bills take it all. I'll be so happy when the Ram is paid off and I have 455 dollars more a month to play with.


I like to be different when I buy parts. I don't always believe in the "you get what you pay for" theroy. I have bought things that people have said don't buy them buy the ones that cost $500 more so far things are ok. Some have problems some don't I'm hoping I'm one that don't
 
1. Didn't buy parts to grow into. I thought I would buy the street heat then step up to the track heat upper when I was ready... wish I had done that first. Bought the 65 thinking I would step up to the 75 when ready... wish I had done that first.

If I could do it over again I would have bought big and tuned accordingly...

Actually..

My number one thing I would have done over again was get the TwEECer for a first mod. That made me understand everything about the car, the engine, etc and would have made planning mods out completely different.

My only regret thus far with my car has been not upgrading the differential/axles to a 31 spline when I had it redone. Other than that, I am very happy with both the cars and the mods.

But... "never cry... modify!"

buying the 3 mac products on my car....

1. pullies...ran all 3 and my alt. damn near cought on fire while melting the term. off the wire. Rusted to an ugly finish that I spent hours cleaning and repainting.

2. shifter...not that bad but the springs are weak the handle rattles loose, the dust cover sucked. better than stock but for the money I should have gone pro-5.0 or MGW (MGW was not out but is replacing my mac shifter).

3. O/R H...the slip joint were the 2 halfs leaks bad (kinda PITA to fix), surface rust on most of it, flanges do not line up with ANYTHING on the catback and at the heads takes some moving to line up right...better than the stocker though.

My goals and "plans" were never that wild. My only focus is have fun and enjoy it. Some things were impulse or deals that more or less found me. Would I go a diff. path??? probably but I have no regrets about my combo and have met/talked/dealt with some fantastic people on this journey.
 
1) putting royal purple synthetic in my manual trans
2) not upgrading posi unit when 3.73s were put in the rear end
3) installing a king cobra clutch before deciding to do a H/C/I project this winter

I love my car, it performs well, so I cant complain!

This list may grow by the spring time...
