Ok, we have a 97 Gt and i think the 2nd gear syncro is goin bad because we I try to shift into it real fast ( wether or not I am racing or just drivin like a granny) it grinds. But if i just shift slow and regular it does fine. I would appriciate any help and maybe a quote on the cost to fix if possible. Thanx,Wes

Really hard to say without pulling the tranny. The synchros are made up of the synchro slider, blocker rings and the dog teeth on the actual speed gears. It all depends on what is worn down. Could be cheap and be the $20 blocker ring, or it could require the replacement of the 2nd gear and the 1-2 slider at about $80-90 for each. Those prices are what i found by searching tranny part dealers like Hanlon Motorsports. Trans Rebuilders might charge a bit more. Hard to say til the tranny is opened.

Labor is what is gonna kill you. Sometimes buying a good used trans or even a new trans can be cheaper than the labor to r&R broken or work tranny components.

Not sure how mechanical you are, but rebuilding the T-5/T-45 is pretty easy. I've done several and it's paid off for me. My latest rebuild was a tranny that grinded 2nd gear. Required replacing the 1-2 slider and 2nd gear. I found some good used parts for under $100 and did the tranny in two days (1 to take tranny apart and see what broke, 2nd day to put it back together after getting parts)

To rebuild your trans will probably run you close to $700-1000. Like i said, it's the labor that kills you. Might be cheaper to have a friend toss in a good used tranny for ya.

when my 96gt started to grind i put redline synthetic trans fluid in and it went away even though the synchros were bad (pulled it and ripped it apart a few thousand miles later) might be a cheaper alternative
