Thinking about buying a Cobra

They were originally 4 lug though. They had the thunderbird looking wheels on them, and were 17".

Thanks. I really respect your opinions, but I can't let this one go. I'm still going to try to talk the guy down a bit due to the miles and it needing some work, but if worse comes to worse, I'll still fork out 7k.

Good luck man! You'll have yourself an important piece of Mustang history there. I guess it doesn't matter how many miles it has, it's still a Cobra!

+1 for pics when you get her all cleaned up!! Maybe a clean up/restoration thread??

a cobra is a work of art...i bought mine used also....and abused....but i look at it as an investment...something that is a few yrs(maybe another 20) it'll be worth more then it does now....just look at the old school mustle cars....a dime a dozen back then....worth as much as a new mustle car today....:SNSign:

UPDATE:

I just ran a Carfax report on it, and its been in three accidents.

Two rear impacts and one front impact. Upon closer inspection today, I did see that the front quarter panel was slightly misaligned.

Not sure how bad or minor the accidents may have been, but I think knowing what I know now, I'll probably pass this up...unless this information can knock off a few thousand?

Just FYI, I had a 90 gt and they are all misaligned from the factory. He needs to come down on his price though.

Give it a shot on getting it cheaper. I thought that was awefully cheap since they usually go for WAY more. On another note, there are tons and tons of possible accidents that won't show on carfax. We have a parts/service shop and I have a customer who literally welded a front half of one car, and a rear half of another car, and resold it for over 12k as a near new car. That's only one of many many shady resale deals I've seen. All those little corner car lots and crap do some retarded things to get cars back on the road and sold. Most things not reported to insurance don't show on carfax either.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna see what I can do about getting the price lowered. They don't know about the accident history, so when I tell them and show them, how much of a drop should I ask for? The guy there said I could probably get the owner to settle for $6,500, and that was before we found out about the accidents.

Tell them 6K, take it or leave it. If they see you did your homework, they'll start to realize that most others will do their homework also and will find the same results you did. When they see that the car may not sell for as much as they want, the price will start coming down anyway, so they'll probably just make the sale now.

But.....everyone has their own brain and they don't all function the same so they may tell you to go **** yourself!!

Well, I negotiated something of a deal. The woman I had to talk to, who owns the car and the shop, knows nothing about cars. Just for some weird reason she happens to own a mustang shop....weird.

Anyways, she just thought I was trying to give her the run-around or something, and probably being a business woman, she was a pretty hardnose negotiator, she didn't give much at all. And me, I'm a crappy negotiator so you can probably imagine how that turned out. I talked her down $400 to $6,600 and that's about it. We're going to close the deal on friday and then I'll be the proud new owner of a high-mileage, somewhat ratty 1993 Cobra.

Congrats man. I am sure you will make something nice out of it. I'd start by getting it un-white trashed by:

#1 Taking that #$%^ off the dashboard,
#2 Getting those "too fat" wheels off with the wrong offset and tire size
to original rims and more realistic tire size.
#3 Taking that hood off and going back to original hood
#4 Take off the "sunshield" on the windshield
#5 New carpet.

And that's my o for a start to a real nice car!

some of that stuff might be ok for a gt..just not a LIMITED cobra..IF done right, ya know!?

I agree. I want to ditch the wheels, hood, and that damned gauge pod thats probably gonna leave holes in the dash......

Interior needs a lot of work, but I dont' think there's anything un-manageable. Just needs a little TLC and some new parts from 50resto. It'll be fun!

Do you think you'll end up swapping a nice hole-free dash in later on? If the heater core ever goes out, that'll be a perfect time to change the dash. I've always hated it when people go to putting holes in their dash to mount gauges and what not. A little creativity is all it takes to mount stuff without drilling holes!

Yeah Mustang, I was wondering the same thing...It would be alot easier to plug them somehow if possible...but only if it looked flawless I guess. I must be weird but I am actually excited about the buy, lol. I have always wanted one of those myself.

Funny story, I had another vehicle that I had to take the dash out of to get to the heater core..you know, the turbo'd one that poured hot antifreeze on my feet while racing a porsche (on a closed track of course).

I normally do things by the book but they must have built the dam car AROUND the heater core...and how you are supossed to get screws out with heads 1 cm from the windshield POINTED TOwARD THE cabin!? I'll never know..

I ended up getting it off after hours with..screwdriver ...socket wrench.. crow bar.. hammer ..hacksaw footwedge! .. utility knife! ..but I got it off.

Notsure how hard it is to get the stand d-board off though.
