Hey guys my power steering is going bad, it seriously sounds like a superchager when i'm cruising, i had 4 people ask me already if it was supercharged thats how bad it is . So anyways i want to ditch it all. I've bin told i wouldnt really be able to tell the difference when i put my skinnies on is this true? Also are there any other kits besides FLAMING RIVER that are alittle cheaper? Which ones are you guys running and are you happy with it?

Manual steering

Don't skimp on this. If you want your steering to feel right, go with the flaming river kit. Be sure to get the whole kit. Rack, Shaft, and Tie rods. I got my kit off of e-bay for $280.00, retail was over $450. Just look around you can find a deal. I have the standard ratio system (15:1), and I can't tell the difference with the front runners on. I have not drove the car with regular street tires as it is a race-only vehicle. They also make a "quick ratio" version that is 18:1.

Good luck, and go with the flaming river kit. You will be disappointed if you don't.

I just looked on E-bay, found two really good ones. One for $299 for FL rack, shaft, and tie rods. Another one with the FL rack and ite rods but had a standard steering shaft (not FL) for $249, and this was the "Buy it Now" price. I am checking my account and if I can, I will. I think the FL shaft is worth it.

Ok heres the real deal..

I got the full flaming river rack kit...

20:1 <- THIS IS THE STANDARD RATIO RACK!

15:1 is the qwik ratio...

You have to order the complete kit, as the manual rack will not work with your steering shaft and also has better tie rod ends (I not sure if the stock ones will work,was told they wouldnt but, oh well I got the kit...)

The steering is BETTER (to me aleast) than the power steerting,very easy to steer actualy...

EDIT:I got the 20:1 rack kit...
The other racks may fit defferant parts (shaft,tie rod ends,etc.)

When it comes to a major thing like steering don't go cheap. It will possibly hurt you in the end.

I went with the FR kit and love it. No problems so far.

I got the 18:1 full FR rack plus steering shaft, the entire setup. The steering feels nice and defined. You cant really one hand it anymore when making corners and parallel parking is a b1tch. I run fullsize fronts and you have to tug to turn the wheels when fully stopped but it's not that bad really. When the car is even slightly rolling, practically no effort though you still cant one hand it. The mustang steering wheel is really a bit too small for manual steering I think.

Or get a new steering pump for a faster and cheaper solution. I wonder how much hp a power steering is using from the engine?

If in good operating condition....like 2-3 hp when you are going straight. Very little. Pump doesnt have pressure unless the wheel is turned. Probably 10-15 when you are turning sharply at low speed but how often do you cut the wheel while driving anyways?

The manual rack is a leak remover and weight saver really.

Have you ever treid to get to the motor mount bolts with PS and long tube headers?Its a pain in the ass...

Anybody running a big tire up front like a 245/45/17?

Like said before, the manual rack removes weight and problems while adding room and power (or at least removing another parasite). I'm trying to get the money for the manual rack. The only accesory I plan to run on the new motor is an alternator.

MM just came out with one that might be worth looking into.

It is a little pricey but looks like it would give you the best of both worlds. And believe me you cannot go wrong with anything from MM.

Thats the worst of both worlds: hard steering, all the weight and drips and leaks of a PS system and it costs a bunch too.

Sort of reminds me of compromise ideas like the "electronic carburetor"

parts store can get manual racks from the early 80's stangs thats what i have cost less than 200 all together rack and rod ends from parts store and fr rag joint adapter from holcomb.

I have a flaming river setup on my car. Personally it would suck for a daily driver (ie. parking) but since I don't drive it much I can live w/ it.

I daily drive with my FR 18:1 rack. I have to do a 5 point dead stop turn at the bottom of my driveway every day. Puts hair on your chest but it's not intolerable. Once at any speed, it's the same basically except for firmer feel.

Agreed, but I'm used to turning the wheel w/ one finger.

I agree- worst of both worlds. I LOVE Max Motorsports but if one is going to retain PS then Id say AUTOZONE El CHeapo PS PUMP.
