I'm thinking about getting an timing adjuster, but I want to know how you install it and how much should I advance the timing and what are the drawback of advancing the time besides running a higher octane gas which costs more. So if anybody has one and would like to share there experience I would apprecaite it.

me too...but with several hand held tuners on the market now I'm thinking I will just save up and advance my timing that way. Anyone remove their timing adjuster and then advance with one of the tuners? How did it compare, more power..less?

from my experience and all my mods. the timing adjuster is one of the top few bolt on's that gaurantee's noticable power. it's only like what, 160$?? Alot of guys see an instant 7-10RWHP gain, and 7-10RWTQ gain, I know I did. and for how easy the install was, it's worth every penny, YES a chip will do the same thing, but once your timing is advanced, you can't touch it unless you tune it again, the T/A is very easy to adjust, it took me about an hour to install. If you don't wanna mess with the hassle of a mail order chip etc, or spending hundreds of dollars on a dyno, slap a timing adjuster on and get your instant power and low end torque!

i have one and i run premium gas with it set to 16* and Ive never experienced any detonation, its hard to describe how to put it in but it comes with detailed instructions and is pretty easy for non-mecanical people like myself it took me around an hour to install its very easy. only drawback i can think of is if you advance to much or run too low of an octane gas you get piniging in the engine which is bad.

My bone stock 96 cobra pings ever so slightly when the secondaries open. It might just be cheap gas. I recently swithced gas stations and I think it reduced the pinging but I have a feeling I could use small timing adjustment. FWIW

So you dont need a tune if you advance the timing. Does it make check engine light come on?

no, it won't mess with your air/fuel at all. only time a light will ever come on is if it's not torqued down correctly, which is easy to do, but if you torque the crank bolt to specs, you're good to go.

I set mine at 14 degrees straight out of the box, ran premium fuel, and have never had a problem. Now I've retarded the timing 2 degrees so I can run regular fuel until gas prices come down or stabilize. Really haven't noticed too much of a drop off in horsepower either.
