Tire recommendation please for 01 Vert

Getting close to replacing my tires - stock 17" rims. Wanted to see if anyone had a good recommendation for a tire they've had good experience with. I've got Eibach Pro Springs, so the ride is already pretty stiff, and that combo with the Kumho all seasons on it now is ok, save for some tracking on uneven roads.

I will more than likely be going with All Season since I will drive it in the fall and on nice winter days (Carolina winters are not brutal but get cold enough to make me pretty sure summer tires are a bad idea)

Do I stick with Kumho, move over to BFG's? None of the above? :shrug:

Nitto NT555. That's what I've run for several years now. Great tire. Lots of wet and dry traction, and they last a while, too. I got almost 35k out of mine, and that was with no alignment and 200+ passes at the track.

Yes, they are a summer tire, and they don't offer the same grip in the winter that they do in the summer, but I have never had a problem with them.

I am leaning toward the Nitto's or Yokohama S's . I think the summers might be ok because this thing wont see snow or temps below 40 anyway, but might see rain here or there.

Anyone have experience with the Yoko's?

+1 on the GS-D3. Very nice looking tire. I just bought a set of Kumho Ecsta XS 335s for the rear of mine, and they seem to grip very well on the cold ground we've had the last couple days.

I usually buy the cheapest tire I can... Sumitomo's FTMFW! Before my FR500's I went through several sets of Fuzion ZRi's on my stock wheels. Of course I only drive my car on nice days and she sits in the garage the rest of the year...

A good friend of mine is the manager of a local Firestone and he always gives me chit for buying cheap tires. My car is for cruising and not for drag or road racing, so I'd rather spend the money I save on mods (appearance, suspension, or engine). I do still have my factory 17's so if/when I ever decide to run in the 1/4 mile or road race, I'll just put nice tires on those wheels. Decent tires for my 18x9's and 18x10's would cost me at least $1300. I think he runs Bridgestone Potenza RE050's and says they're great tires. I'm sure they are, but at $375 each... no thanks!

Haha yea, my buddy's parents bought him a set of RE050's for his Audi and when I told him what they cost, he was dumbfounded. They are good tires, but not worth the money.

I'm going to jump on the Nitto 555 bandwagon here. Although I'm not running them now, I had them on my old car, and not only did they last me the longest out of any tire I've ever had, but they had the best grip. I've had 2 sets of 315/35/17 Sumitomo's and they SUCKKK. They last forever, but they don't grip for ****! I can easily spin all of 1st and 2nd gear, and bark 3rd without even trying. The only reason why I got them is because I only paid $100 for the pair very slightly used and figured I'd upgrade when I get the money. A complete set of 255 and 315 Nitto's is in my near future.

Why didn't you buy a V6 if you don't care about performance and handling? Because tires are the most inportant mod you can make as they connect the car to the road. You'd seriously spend money on gears before tires? Steeper gears will just smoke your cheap tires and make your car slower than stock.

Think of it this way - spend an extra $300 on tires and your car will be faster off the line, handle better, and anyone who knows will recognize you spent money where it counts. Skimp on tires and it doesn't matter how much power you gained from your new exhaust, your greasy cheap tires won't let you put it down.

BFG KDWS was the best all-season tire I've had if you rarely encounter snow and ice. It's a great tire most of the year, but only an OK tire for getting through a snowy winter.

BFG KDW2s grip in cool conditions. Obviously not snow. They are monsters in the wet, dry and they grip first thing in the AM in Massachusetts. $$$$ Pilot Sports were MISERABLE in cooler conditions up here.

I'm not talking throwing $100 junk on it - the car is a cruiser, and if it sees the strip I'll get something specific for that, but I can't justify dropping $1000 - $1200 on tires , when decently performing tires can be had for a little over $700 - I'm not talking the junk that can be had for $500...

Get on tirerack and do your own research. Everyone prefers something different from their tires. Some want a compliant ride with good all weather grip while others want to imagine highway onramps are one big auto X course and they want some stiff sidewalls and huge treadblocks for maximum grip. For that reason, it is nearly impossible to recommend something based on your desire for an all season tire. BTW, please note the nitto 555 is NOT an all season tire and as such will have terrible traction in cold weather... much less snow or ice.

Personally, I usually choose based on the best wet stopping distance for the money (as tested by tirerack). If it has good wet traction, chances are it will work well in the dry and corner well. Just beware and read the reviews looking for consistent balance, wear or road noise issues.

My last couple sets of tires have been the yokohama H4S. They have a nice firm sidewall, excellent stopping distance and are terribly loud when well worn, all for a very reasonable 130$ each. This time, I will probably buy the continental extremecontact dws. I guess I'm getting old and my driving habits are changing, so a softer sidewall, reasonably good cornering traction, great braking and better gas mileage appeal to me. Plus, the price is very competitive. They are rated very very highly in the snow and ice too, which is amazing for the performance class it is in.

I currently have two favorites right now. I've ran several sets of Nitto 555's on my 04 GT and I love them.

On my 90 we are about to be on the 3rd or 4th set of Fuzion ZRi's. I've had good luck with them also, and they are affordable.

If budget is a concern and you need new tires(and not ones that can climb trees) I suggest General Exclaims UHP's. I have them and like them very much, won't break the bank either.

I've only used the Nitto 555s and they are AWESOME. I've got about 34,000km (21,000 miles) on mine right now and they have about half of the tread remaining. They are good in the wet, great in dry, quiet, and last a good amount of time. I would recommend them.

I've also heard good things about the Goodyear Eagle GS-D3 and the BFG KDW IIs.
