Tires for 17's on a 65

Ok, so I have decided I'm going to pull the trigger and purchase new rims (17x8 w/ 4.75" backspacing). I'm going with 225/45/R17 for the front, but for the rear I'm torn. I like the slight staggered look with larger tires for the rear so I'm eyeing 245/45/R17 or 255/45/R17. I know from this forum and other sources that both will fit, 245s being not so much a problem, but 255s might be pushing it. Is it that hard to fit the 255s, does it require more that just bending the lip in? I plan to run Maier 165 leafs w/ ~1.25" drop. Thanks

What's the difference between the 255 and 245? isn't it less than 1/2"? I think fitting the 255 tire in the rear was with 5" backspacing, not 100% sure but thought I might mention it just in case. with 4.75bs I had to roll the fender lips but I did have a Versailles rear.

If you roll the fender lip you can run 255/40/17 tire. 225/45 on the front is small, you can run a 235/45/17 without rolling the fender no problem, and maybe even a 245 without rolling the fender. On my car I went 235/45/17 all around 17x8 4.75 bs, clears with lots of room front, fender rolled, rear clears without lip rolled, a 245 I probably would have to roll the lip, I have maier 165 race springs. I ran 275's on the back of mine, 255's should be no problem.

I had 245 45's mounted on 17x8's on all 4 corners, with trimmed front fender lips they still rubbed. I ended up having the front wheels narrowed to 7" and went with 205/50s in front. It looks great and the car tracks amazingly better with a narrower tire in front, I have no regrets. The 245's on the left rear will rub the stock outer quarter lip on a hard bump but its minimal.

yea, my 245's rub like crazy up front, even after trimming the fender...I can't stand it. Narrowing my wheels is in my future.

It is all in the backspace, if you run 4.5 instead of the 4.75 you need, you will have rubbing issues, also if you are running the wrong alignment specs, it will rub.

Maybe 1" is too much, you should measure those wheels and figure the right size spacer to run. Or have the spacers turned down if they are rubbing.

Maybe a 3/4" spacer up front, also I remember a member Dodgestang I believe, saying he runs 245's up front. I think he said something about special alignment specs at one point.

Yup, I run 245/40 up front with the lips rolled and -3deg camber.

i run a 245 up front and a 265 out back, no issues.
