To tune or not to tune?! That is the question

just realized I put this on the wrong section...

Hey guys. Last year I left my car to my brother so he could
install an Intake and Hearders. We'll since he has his own
shop he went ahead and installed an E cam.

Well I am now tired of the driving issues, mainly the idle
and the fact that the damn thing dies on me every now and then.
Damn 95 cpu!!!

There is a deal around here where I can get a chip and tune for
$399

We'll my combo is as follows

E-cam
Eddy Performer Intake
OR H-pipe
Headers
Pullies
65mm Tbody


I haven't done the heads 'couse I know it needs all the supporting
items such as fuel, injectors, rockers, etc. and it can get
crazy expensive. And I want to do it right.

We'll u guys think I should just tune what I have now, since that
deal sounds resonable, or just wait until I get the rest of the combo.
Heads I mean.

i would go with the tune...... it will help and solve a lot of driveability problems if not all. That is if it is done correctly..

your car should not die. you might want to raise the idle a little see if it helps. im still untuned, and my idle is solid. the only drivability problem i have is bucking under 1500 rpms. find out why the car is dying, then get a tune if you still need it. what other driveability problems do you have?

For some weird reason the car just dies when I'm doing a slow turn.
For example if I'm driving about 25 mph and I turn slow down to
about 10-15 mph or so, the car dies on me when I engadge the
clutch to downshift.

You seem to have a very similar combo as me. I see I need rockers!

Drivability issues can be so frustrating

You may be able to play around with things like, tb blade stop screw, isc air bleed, fuel pressure, timing, and the like for a more stable idle
but
doing all the above and even more may not give you much relief.

I've spent a lot of time looking into drivability issues and it is my firm belief that when talking about this subject, it just ain't a cut & dry kinda deal.

Even when you have access to all options in the pcm, drivability issues can be quite the challenge from time to time.

I've worked with other Self Tuners who have combos similar to mine. On more than one occasion, I've seen each of us have to deal with things in the pcm the other did not necessarily have to mess with to obtain decent drivability.

I've seen some of the chip burners offer a reburn at a reduced rate if needed. Maybe if something like that is available, it might help.

Like the others above have said, use what mechanical adjustments you have available to you and see how much improvement you can obtain.

Here is a little tip that may help with your mechanical adjustments

Make only one change at a time and reset the pcm.
Wait a few days before changing anything else.

That amount of time should give the pcm's adaptive strategy a chance to stabilize enough to the point you should be able to tell if any improvement is being made.

If you need to make another change, reset the pcm & wait again to see the results of your change.

Personally, I don't think you need a tune yet.
