Just wondering how fast some of you have gotten you're 5.0's up to? closed course of course!:nice: Also wondering where my car should top out (mods in sig), and why it would top out there? gearing, hp, aerodynamics? what would be the major limiting factor for top speed?

mine about 1/2 inch or so after 140 mph on the stock speedo

the limiting factors in going faster are

1 having the balls to do it

2 staying in it the car will get real wobbly at higher speeds

3 having a straight road that is long enough or:Track:

4 teh police:D

what would it take to get a 5.0 into the 170+ mph range?
It takes a lot more than you'd think.

A stock, 5.0 Fox-body is drag-limited to about 140 mph. As you increase speed, drag increases by the square, and the power required to overcome it increases by the cube.

170 mph is 121.4% of 140 mph. 1.214 x 1.214 x 1.214 = 1.789

You'd need almost 79% more horsepower to gain that extra 30 mph. Assuming a stock, 225 hp at the crank, that's a total of about 403 hp needed to go 170 mph.

You can confidently raise the :bs: flag when someone on here claims to have gone 165 with a cold air intake as their only mod. It's a product of wishful thinking and speedometer inaccuracy (up to +10% from the factory).

what would it take to get a 5.0 into the 170+ mph range? i've gotten to about 235km/h which is about 14X mph i believe, and was still under 5k rpms but ran out of road

that's 146 miles per hour! to figure it out you multiply kms by 0.6214 and that will give you your answer in mph! to convert mph you multiply mph by 1.6093 and that will give you kms! to get a mustang to go 170mph it would have to travel at 273.581 kms! James

My 92 with a 306, Lunati Voodoo cam, LT, O/R H-pipe, MACs with dumps and 3.55 with a T-5 would only do 149 via GPS, 156~7 on speedo (SSP cluster). The Cobra only has O/R H-pipe and chip with 3.73 and has done 158 GPS (speedo said 150) and was still pulling hard but the car has bigger balls than me, especially after what happened to hotmustang331 :notnice:

Among the old time hot rodders, the Bonnevile salt flats is the place to go for top speed runs. The first mechanic job I had back in the late 60's, I worked for a guy who raced a 1953 Studebaker with a Chevy V8 at Bonneville. Before you laugh and say Stude what?, The 1953 Studebaker Golden Hawk had one of the best low drag areodynamic shapes ever built on an American made production car.

The Bonneville salt flats has an annual event for street cars. Check out http://www.saltflats.com/ to find out more about it. It is a very interesting site and event.

my 88 saleen regurally sees 140 on the front straight at wsir. feels real good and if the straightaway was longer could definatly get more. it has been shot with the radar several times 144 was the fastest seen. but its far from stock!
