I'm trying to do some research for a friend, and she's wanting to fix her husbands truck. The truck has a 300 CID six. The truck is a '78 F150 4x4. The transfer case is still good, and the current tranny is still good. The tranny she wants to replace was the 3 speed with granny gear. She wants a 5-speed manual trans. to go in.

My question to you guys is: What tranny will fit up to this?

What years start fitting?

Will she need to get an adapter plate or something, or will any 5 speed tranny. from a full size 4x4 bolt up?

seems like all will olt up as long as it was a 4x4 tranny so the transfer case still bolts up. unless you have a divorced transfr case

They didn't offer a 5spd still 87 in the F-series. They had two different transmission that will bolt up to a 300-6. One is a ZF and can be identified by the diamond shaped ribs in the in the case, no removable top cover and about 99% of them used and external clutch slave cylinder. The second type was the Mazda design. They have rectangular ribs on the case, removable top cover and internal clutch slave cylinder. The ZF style is the heavier duty of the two. I would not recommend putting the Mazda style trans behind a 300-6. Any of these from behind a 300-6, 302, or 351 will work. I don't think an old 203 or 205 will bolt to this tranny. They are also not going to be the same length so you will have to build drive lines and modify the crossmember. You will also have to convert to a hydraulic clutch system. Using the newer style 208 or 1356 transfercase that comes out from behind the 5spd will be your best bet.

The ZF 5spd's could be found in any of the f-series trucks from 87-96 in the F150's and broncos and 87-97 F250 and F350's.

all correct, and iirc, they also put the zf behind some big blocks and maybe diesels, so make sure you get one from a small block. btw, any ford small-block v8 bell will bolt up to the 300six, so it may be possible to use something like a tko with some modifications (no idea if the input bearing is the same or not though, but its a thought).

you may want to check out fordsix.com, there is a TON of useful information on there, back when the ole 90 was my sole vehicle i frequented that site, you can learn a lot about those big sixes there.
